Stem Cell Therapy For Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a seriously debilitating disease with over 1.6 million sufferers in the US (Pfizer, n.d.). RA is a disease where people have “pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints” (Pfizer, n.d.). Because of the high number of individuals affected by the disease and the severity of the disease, there is an urgency to find a cure for RA. Researchers and sufferers are hopeful that stem cell therapy may help treat RA. This essay will address the benefits and drawbacks of stem cell therapy for RA.
There are various benefits of stem cell therapy for RA. Previous research was heavily focused on targeted therapies on the immune cells. However, the focus has shifted to stem cell therapy instead. According to De Bari (2015), MSCs may do good or bad in the process. “MSCs in the joint could be active players contributing to the pathogenesis of arthritis” (De Bari, 2015). Stem cells play big roles in the human body. MSCs may sometimes let the bones disjoint or increase swelling in the patient’s body part that is affected by RA. Pathogens may increase if the stem cell therapy goes wrong. Since it is not easily detected, it is important to closely monitor the patient with RA in order for the MSC therapy to reduce risk of further damage in the body.
The benefits and drawbacks of stem cell therapy for RA were discussed. RA is one of the diseases that needs stem cell therapy for treatment.
