Miracle or tragedy? Stem cell research offers great promise for understanding basic mechanisms of human development, as well as the hope for new treatments for diseases such as diabetes, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, and myocardial infarction. However, human stem cell research also raises sharp ethical and political controversies. But what are stem cells? Stem cells are unspecialized cells which have the potential to create other types of specific cells, such as blood-, brain-, tissue- or muscle-cells. Theoretically divide without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal still alive. Scientists think that stem cells are in all of our body and lives, but are far more potent in a fetus than in an adult body. …show more content…
The embryo constitutes life because it has the potential to fully develop into a human being. Therefore, stem cell research can be compared with abortion or murder. Literally, any one of these destroyed human embryos could be the next Mozart or Einstein. Some scientists argue that stem cell research in the far future can lead to knowledge on how to clone humans. It is hard to say whether this is true, but we have seen devastating consequences of other research-programs, even with good intentions, such as nuclear research. Other major reason to be against steam cells is that if all of these would be worth it. Even the top researchers admit that any sort of breakthrough on the stem cell research front is years away. What if all this research is for nothing? Sure, we have high hopes for stem cells, but it could be that they will not prevent, cure, or treat any …show more content…
However, it is not ethically right to pursue any health-related gain through unethical or immoral means like the taking of an innocent life. It is seen as wrong to also sacrifice the embryonic class of human beings in order to benefit another. Nevertheless, there is a solution in where we can use the stem cells and not have to kill or destroy the embryos. The solution is to use adult stem cell, there are the ones found in bond marrow. Adult stem cells should be used instead of the embryos because they can also be as versatile as the embryonic variety. When the adult stem cells are used which come from the patients themselves, there will be little danger of them being
