There are many people out there who have said that stem cell research is a crucial part to moving up in medical technologies. Stem cell research can help doctors unlock different and more helpful forms of medicines that can impact many different illnesses. But then on the other hand, there are people who see stem cell research as a negative and basically a form of abortion. Now abortion is an issue all on its own but when stem cell research, which is supposed to be beneficial to society, is being stated as harmful and negative, it really makes others view it differently. This is for the fact that scientists can only find and use them from embryos that are a few days old (Mayo). These are the cells that have more potential to help and be used in medicines. Saxena mentions that the reason that embryotic stem cells are so useful is for the fact that these are the cells that can divide and change into a different type of cell (225). A big problem is that these cells are hard to come by for the fact that since they are basically a baby in the making, they were and are protected by many different policies. The only way that scientists are able to obtain stem cells is when they “are derived from embryos that develop from eggs that have been fertilized in- vitro clinic and then donated for research purposes with informed consent of the donors.” (Saxena, 225) In vitro mean to be made in a test tube or outside of the body (Webster, 659). Adult stem cells much easier to obtain and are currently the most used types of cells for stem cell therapy. These cells are able to be “isolated” from areas of the body such as the bone marrow, umbilical cords, the placenta, and even certain body fats. Although these stem cells are still very useful, not all of them are able to differential like the embryotic stem cells.
