What are stem cells? What good or bad opinions do people have of them? How can they be used to help people get better, and how are they currently being used? While there are good and bad things about stem cells, many things about stem cells need to be understood first. There are many properties of stem cells that no other type of cell has. One property that stem cells have is that they can renew themselves for long periods of time (Stem-5). This means that they create a large population of stem cells whereas cells like muscle and heart cells can not do that normally (Stem-5). One source for embryonic stem cells is embryos that were previously frozen and in storage, and then given to scientists for research (Stem-2). The embryos were then fertilized and used for the stem cells (Stem-2). A source for adult stem cells is in the bones of the body (Stem-1). In the bones, the stem cells are found specifically in the marrow of the bones (Stem-1). The marrow of the bones contain two different types of stem cells called hematopoietic stem cells, which create every type of blood cell in the body, and the bone marrow stromal stem cells, which make up a very small amount of cells in types of bones like cartilage and bone marrow (Stem-1). Another source of adult stem cells are in the brain (Stem-1). These cells are in three larger groups called astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and neurons which is what these stem cells eventually become (Stem-1). For scientists to make stem cells effective, they have to first make sure that when they grow the stem cells, that it makes the correct organ that the patient needs, and does not start to make another organ that is unneeded (Stem-3). The next thing that scientists need to make sure that is safe for stem cells to be used is that the organ will be accepted by the body and not attacked by the body 's immune system, which would lead to even more problems for the patient (Stem-3). Thirdly, the stem cell would need to be able to safely enter and stay apart of the surrounding tissue that the patient has, and neither the tissue, nor the transformed stem cells get damaged when it is transplanted (Stem-3). Another thing that needs to be completely safe before stem cells are used, is that the stem cell organ needs to work like the organ is supposed to work for the rest of the time that the patient is alive (Stem-3). Finally, the scientists that are doing this research need to make sure that the patient would never be hurt during or after the transplant in any way
