Simile and Imagery
In the chapter 1, Steinbeck uses simile and imagery to describe the environment that Joah’s family is living in, in which it brings a vivid image to the readers’ minds. Steinbeck compares the morning dust hung to fog to which we can see that dust is being used like struggles that people have to deal with everyday and seeing it as fog, we can see the large amount of struggles that people go through each day due to it the definition of fog; a dense or large layers of cloud sticking together. By doing this, he conveys the readers that the fire is basically a human in sense that “fire” is able to leap and throw. He implies an intense feeling and essential put the readers’ eyes into the characters’ eyes at the time. The characters see “fire” is leaping can show that it’s easily to spread, and it conveys a sadness tone towards the community and how their hardworks have been burned in just a few minutes. In addition, Steinbeck utilizes the word “shadow” to reveal how everything is covered by the fire and is under darkness. He wants to point out to the readers that although when we look back into history, we see that many are farmers yet farming wasn’t a stable job at the same time due to its costs. In order to earn enough for the family to be well-living, the farmer has to have a large amount of money before the season starts, where he/she usually borrow it from the bank. The hardest part or where many farmers lost their homes is in the crops itself, sometime even the bestest farmer lost their house due to the crops won’t bloom, and now they fall in debt and continue to fall in a deeper debt in the next seasons or so due to taxation.
