Steelheart's Failure

In futuristic Chicago (Newcago), a teen named David studies superpowered Epics and the rebellious Reckoners. After helping the Reckoners kill an Epic, David and the Reckoners start to take the down the ruler of Newcago, Steelheart. Although the Reckoners have some success, they lose a member and can not exploit Steelheart’s weakness. They then decided to go to Soldier Field where the Reckoners took on Steelheart with little planning. All options have failed and now David sits with a dying Reckoner in his hands and Steelheart is pointing a gun at his head. From my pocket, I took the detonator pen. I knew this was my last act of defiance. Steelheart stood over me looking triumphant. I watched as his hand reached for my gun and I gave it to him …show more content…
As I look past Steelheart’s dying body I see Megan standing there, handgun in a raised position, tears streaking down her face. I run over to her and she fall sobbing into my arms. “Calamity, Megan, how did you do that?” I asked.
“I figured out his weakness,” she sniffed. Her tears were dying off. “Remember how I told you that I thought Steelheart ruled for a reason. Well, it became clear that only Steelheart himself or me could kill him.
“How can that be?” I wondered.
“Steelheart has been terrorizing Newcago for years,” she explained. “He has made the people afraid, made them hate him. Even his top Epics like Nightwielder. He has made it where they want him dead. But that’s the key, the only people who can kill him are people who don’t want him dead. Your dad thought Steelheart was a hero, so he didn’t want him dead.”
“Calamity,” I whispered again.
“Never mind me now, Knees, we have make sure Prof is ok.” “Oh yeah!” I exclaimed. Prof was motionless when we reached him. I fell next to his crumpled body and checked for a pulse. There was none. Prof was dead. I spoke to the team through my mobile. “Prof is dead,” Tia was crying in my ear. “So is Steelheart. I need you guys down here for a pickup,

I turned to go. Megan’s face turned sour as she growled, “I thought you of all people would understand Knees,” her voice was echoing across the stadium. “You wanted him dead!”
“No,” I said. “Not like this. I didn’t kill one tyrant for another to take his place.”
“Fine!” she exclaimed. “You can never come back, because I will torture you and kill you, because I sacrificed Steelheart for you!”
I didn’t say anything, neither did anyone else. There was nothing else to be said. Steelheart had died, by a follower’s hand. She had loved his rule, so nothing was going to change. The Reckoners were done here. As Tia started the engine I looked down at Megan and saw as she looked on, and calamity was she beautiful. Maybe one day we could come back, help her find her way.
In the end, Steelheart bled and Steelheart died. So did Prof, and in a way so did Megan, but maybe it isn’t the end. Maybe one day all Epics will be gone and things will go back to normal. Maybe the Reckoners will unite the Fractured States. Maybe I’ll get Megan to go out with me. Just maybe. As the chopper flew away, the sun, a new beginning for all of us, rose for the first time in ten
