First hand, Steam rules in big ships because it is around 75-84% efficiency rating. I was a MM1 in my part of my Navy career so I learned and focused heavily on steam propulsion and power generation. After the second half of my first part of my career I transitioned over to the Diesel Side. I later was cross rated to Engineman since all I did was Diesel work primarily. Superchargers are forced induction power adders driven off the engine using gears or belts which substantially requires lots of horsepower from the engine to drive them, but they also return more power than they consume to offset their negatives to a positive. Supercharges are the easiest way to add power to many gasoline engines because they bolt on fairly simply and only require new belts and air piping to set them up.
