Revealing the Truth
Discovering things doesn't always lead to positive results; it may lead to a change of life. Guy M develops a theme enforcing how sometimes things are better left unknown. It also explains how Monsieur Lantin changed due to his acknowledgment of the cost of the jewelry. Often family members keep certain information from a loved one because they know how they will react towards the truth. For that reason, Monsieur Lantin’s wife kept the truth from him, because she foreshadowed his reaction. Monsieur Lantin by knowing the gems were real began to have doubts in his wife and became a greedy overbearing character. “But then, it must have been a present!-- a present !-- a present from whom? Why was it given to her? He stopped and remained standing in the middle of the street. A horrible doubt entered his mind-- she?” ( ) This proves that Monsieur Lantin knew his wife couldn’t afford such expensive jewelry; came up with the conclusion that they were presents. By stating that a horrible doubt came to mind shows he came to believe his wife could’ve had an affair with him because she had received costly gifts. If he would’ve left the price of the jewels unknown, he would still think that the relationship between him and his wife had remained strong till life did them apart.

Another sign of greed was when he said, “ I have -- I have more other gems, which came from the same source. Will you buy them also?”.( ) These two signs of greed showed that Monsieur Lantin kept wanting more and didn’t settle for the eighteen thousand francs he had received from the first piece of jewelry he sold. Finding out his wife’s jewelry was not artificially made increased an intense desire for wealth, losing track of who he was

On the other hand, while viewing the film True Lies, I found it very violent and infiltrating to the mind and soul. The protagonist Harry, is portrayed as a white traditional family man, who happens to be the head of his household. On the other hand, Harry’s wife Helen, is portrayed as the traditional mother/housewife character and is employed as a legal secretary, which is considered as a lower paying job in comparison to Harry’s. For this reason, women are treated as second-class citizens by men. According to Cawelti, “The history of violence is pervaded by racism and the violence associated with the protection of white male supremacy” (Cawelti 2004, 211).…

Dialogue is also used tellingly to convey the central protagonist’s wish to belong to a higher class.…

Understanding the desire of the proletariat class to overcome the oppression caused by those who have control over them, will give more understanding to the relationship between the Loisels. Through the characteristic flaws shown by Matilda, Marxist theory is upheld. With Marx’s idea of how Capitalism works, class conflict, manipulation, and repression are exemplified through the characteristic conflicts that build and destroy the husband and wife’s relationship within the story, while helping them become one with each…
