Staying Put Analysis

Do you think it's beneficial living in a place where dangerous things happen? In the reading “Staying Put,” Scott Russell Sanders talks about him experiencing a farm family being destroyed by nature several times. Three tornadoes struck their home several times but decided to stay and rebuild their home. He questioned himself why this family never tried to move to a non-hazardous area. However, he realized that they had everything they needed around; for example, they had their relatives nearby, had helpful friends, and had everything within a short drive. Sander believes this family has a third instinct which is staying put, but what does that mean? In the essay, Sanders talks about a family that stays put because they invested so much time in their home. For instance, they planted crops, plants, spread manure, and manufactured new items for their home. To illustrate, if you were to live in a segregated community and someone stood up for everyone would you not like to stay? For example, Martin Luther King Jr. was an activist who led the Civil Right Movement. In addition, he was one of the main people who spoke up for equality and freedom. He wanted to create a community that can be equal and united. Eventually people will help each other out and invest time until they get what they want. They would take time to created posters, banners, advertisement and even protest. With that said people are not going to leave their home because they know how much time and money they spend on a certain thing. People would be upset if they were to leave for something that can be fixed even though it would take some time. Furthermore, people would think they should leave because it is dangerous and inappropriate. They are living in a pleasing place that they believe is good and safe. They are not going to leave if they know how things are settled in their home. Some people know how society works and just admire the people that surround them. With that said, do you think people would want to live in a community that contained violence, ignorant people, and no liberty? On the other hand, there is a good amount of people that would stay and continue to live that harsh life. They feel that they are living a happy life and want to continue to enjoy it while it last. Happiness is an important factor because if your not happy them what is going to make you happy? How people determine if they are living a happy life is by being involved with the community, being friendly with everyone, and being peaceful. Although, happiness is a beneficial factor to stay put people do not want to feel unhappy, obnoxious, or uncomfortable.People would not enjoy life thinking about all the negative connotations which would bring them down and not make them successful. Overall, people need pleasure in their life to stay put, and it inspires people to stay and want to remain living
