Meaning that something like style, for example, often will take ideas and/or concepts from a previous time and use it again in a very similar yet new way. As the saying goes, “history tends to repeat itself.” This is a very true statement whereas history does ten to repeat itself in a way, especially through artwork. Art as a whole is a major part of culture.…
The Meaning of Art In Dorothy Allison’s, This is Our World, she creates many arguments about art, artists, and the way art is viewed. There are many times throughout the essay where she claims the audience can interpret art differently. However, this is not always the case. The interpretation of art is not always up to the audience.…
Marcus Aurelius was born in 121 C.E. Marcus became Emperor in AD 161, initially alongside Lucius Versus. He became the sole Emperor in AD 169. Continual attacks meant that a lot of his reign was spent on campaign, especially in central Europe. It is important to realize the gravity of that position and the magnitude of power that Marcus possessed. He held one of, if not the most, powerful positions in the world.…

Art has played an important role in human culture for ages; even before the term “art” exists. In the essay “The Trouble with (the Term) Art”, Carolyn Dean questions about the universal definition of “art”, and examines “the consequences of identifying art in societies where such a concept did or does not exist” (p. 26). As the title of the article suggests, the term “art” provokes many discussions and questions. Although we have known the term “art” probably since we are in kindergarten, many of us neglect the profoundness of this simple term. Dean starts off by pointing out that “art” is an ambiguous term because of the differences in people’s aesthetic.…

The equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius is a bronzed sculpture of 173-176 C.E, and by which the artist in unknown. It is quite odd, because who wouldn’t want to take pride after creating such a historical and detailed piece of artwork. The Roman statue shows an important royal and grand stance, which signifies heroism and authority. There is much power, as a result of the emperor on a horse, clearly ruling not only the horse, but possibly an audience as well, due to his right hand extended outward.…

It is well known that Western culture and the Western world has endeavored to assert itself over other cultures for many centuries. Beginning with the colonization of groups of people deemed lesser by the standards of white Europeans, who often forced their customs or religion on people they had colonized, Western civilizations continue to push their cultural standards on other parts of the world, especially when it pertains to art. In the essay, “The Trouble with the Term Art”, Carolyn Dean raises questions about the overwhelming western standard of art, and how different cultures have different views of aesthetic beauty. The central argument of Dean’s essay is that the normal definition of art has been skewed to only include the values of Western society.…
What is art and what art is have been very controversial topics of discussion for centuries. Art is a very opinionated subject, and many people tend to share different views when it comes to art. To this day, we still do not have one solid, universally agreed upon definition of art. This makes it very hard to decide what is art, and what is not, considering we do not have a perfectly correct guideline to follow. Philosophers and artists have been sharing their beliefs on the argument of art for a very long time now.…
First of all, what is art and what is not art? It is always hard to define art because different people has the different idea about art. According to the article, “The ARTS and the CREATION of MIND” “It is a process that is shaped by culture, influenced by language, impacted by beliefs, affected by values, and moderated by the distinctive features of that part of ourselves we sometimes describe as our individuality. (Eisner)” In…
It is no wonder then, that philosophers of art have proposed numerous theories attempting to define the nature of art, that is, what distinguishes art from anything else in the world. With so many theories that have endeavoured to answer this central question, a consensus has never been reached. Despite their seemingly logical arguments, an explanation of some of the main theories, formalism, expressionism, institutionalism and intentionalism, has shown that each of the theories are vulnerable to counterexamples. Therefore, the hybrid theory suggested, addressed each of the problems found in the theories mentioned in an attempt to design an infallible theory of art. At the present time it seems that this hybrid theory is not subject to any counterexamples.…
Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
