“Status symbols are medals you buy yourself”-Bernhard Wicki. In today’s society most humans are placed in social classes based on the material possessions they gain. Unlike in the past where appearance mattered more than the what the item can be used for. In the story “The Necklace,” written by Guy de Maupassant, Mme. Loisel finds herself desperate to enter a higher social class through attaining multiple status symbols. Although most status symbols can be bought, status symbols have changed over time because of people’s constant change of evaluation based on the person’s knowledge or material possessions.
