Status Of The American Hero

Decent Essays
It is important to realize that the truth is that the dream of becoming a hero that empowers so many is just that a dream because not anyone can become a hero. Even if individuals have the capacity to rise to the status of the American hero they cannot because, unfortunately, the reality is that the American hero is no real hero but the by-product of the patriarchal ideals and values that are alive today in American society.

In Reynold’s Price famous “Hero of Our Times” speech he says that, “Our need for heroes is at least as old as our need for enemies.” Even before Greek myths, there were boundaries and expectations because without enemies there wouldn’t be a need for heroes. To be an American hero in the twentieth century is a matter of perspective. In my perspective, to be an American hero in the twentieth century means that one must be a model to aspire others, sacrifice something of meaning for the greater good, and should be willing to “answer the call”.…

Many Heroes accomplish great tasks and exemplify determination when completing such tasks. Being a hero involves showing determination, a person can’t do anything if they aren’t determined to do what they want to do. He knew the consequent would be going back to slavery, which for him was worse than death. According to Frederick Douglass’s autobiography which explains how he rose above his fears to make a difference, it states,” ...…

In the book “A Lesson Before Dying” there are many American themes that are hit on. Although, one that was really hit on was the ‘American Hero’. Everybody has a different outlook on a modern hero. Some people think of them as brave romancers, who would do anything for the damsel in distress. Others prefer a brother at arms, rushing into distress for those they love. No matter who it is though, these people expect equality from their “hero.” Nobody imagines a slave owner, or an Ellis Island employee as their hero.…

“Heros represent the best of ourselves.” Being a hero takes selflessness and couragousness, but heroism is not getting in the way of others hopes and dreams. Heros put others before themselves. For example, the poem “Frederick Douglass” states, “...with the lives grown out of his life, the lives fleshing his dream of beautiful, meaningful thing,” which proves that Douglass is selfless.…

After reading this chapter, I have no choice but agree with the Author in his assessment on how the text books that American children have been using for generation, provide them of an incomplete and unrealistic view of history. For some children history is “a boring subject, full of old stories about old people” (my 5th grader cousin’s opinion); Views like this are the result of the ambiguous and confusing information found on text book. On textbooks, the image of American historical figures, have been objectified to a point that they lost authenticity; the people written about on those pages have become nothing more, than fictional characters. In other words, they undergo the process that James W Loewen, calls “heroification”.…

Some people do not know that they are even someone’s hero. When a person has the power to stand strong and fight for what they believe in they too can be a hero. These are the type of people that give others hope and save lives each and every day. You do not have to have super powers to save someone, you do not have to be in a position or a career where the main goal is to save someone’s life such as a doctor, a policeman or a firefighter. Heroes can be everyday people, such as a teacher; who teaches kids the everyday essentials of life to grow and be a better person, a parent; who guides and raise their children and protect their children, and even a janitor or trash man; people that help keep the environment clean for our safety and…
