Statue Differences

In looking at the statues in this weeks lesson I see many differences and similarities. First I will address some of the similarities. One is that they are both statues. Both are of Kings in the B.C. time frame. Both are sculptures and are carved in stone of different kinds. The differences are that The Royal Acquaintances statue is made from Limestone and paint, where the Statue of Gudea is made of Diorite. The Statue is of King Gudea and he is alone sitting on his throne. He is sitting in a formal position and has his hands in his lap. The statue of The Royal Acquaintances statue is of Memi and Sabu a married couple in the royal family, they are standing side by side with his arm over her shoulder. This is a much less formal position and …show more content…
I personally like the Royal Acquaintances statue best. I like the softer and more personable position of the couple. I also like the lighter coloring of the statue. According to the Helibrunn timeline of art history this statue was designed and made in the Dynasty 4 era between 2575-2465 B.C It is from Egypt.. This type statue was usually placed in a hidden statue chamber mostly found in nonroyal tomb chapels of the old kingdom. The statue was considered a gift to the deceased and was believed the spirit could use it as a home and enter into it to benefit from gifts of food that were brought into the offering chamber of the tomb. it is aprox 24.5 inches high,, 9.5 inches wide and 6 inches deep.

The statue of Gudea is a more formal piece in my view. The king is sitting on his throne and has his hands in his lap. It is from the Neo-Sumarian culture in Mesopotamia.in 2090 B.C . This king had many statues of himself made over his time as king. It is made of diorite. Diorite is an intrusive igneous rock composed principally of the silicate minerals plagioclase feldspar (typically andesine), biotite, hornblende, and/or pyroxene. this statue is approximately 17.5 inches high, 8.5 inches wide, and 11.5 inches

The statue, a hollow-cast bronze, is fully frontal with a ridged and stiff posture (Ridgway 1967: 46). The left foot is taking a step forward, but both feet are firmly planted on the ground. The chest is square and bulky, yet the features, such as the abdominal muscles and the pectoral muscles are barely defined because of a lack of modeling with the “omission of digitations or ribs” (Ridgway 1967: 50). The statue is in the nude, like archaic kouros are. The face is angular with high copper brows and copper lips that are demonstrating the prominent archaic smile.…

Edward Jonas’ Legacy Fountain (fig. 1), represents the transition of Florida State College for Women to the college we know is as today Florida State University. With six statues in total in the fountain Jonas’ shows this transition by incorporating a wall of water between the two halves of the fountain. I believe this fountain was built to commemorate this transition and be a main focal point of Landis Green and the university as it was a huge moment in Florida State Universities history. When looking at the fountain it is clear there is a reason for the splitting of the six statues by a wall of water.…

The piece is made from indurated limestone and stands 76.75 inches high and 19.3 inches wide. The large block of carved limestone is shiny and left to be mostly unpainted. There are various characteristics that feminize this king. Her chin is raised to an angle that her eyes do not meet with the viewers; it is as if she is looking beyond. The shape of the face is comparable to a heart, accompanied with small, almond-shaped eyes, and thin, closed lips.…

It features a man and women standing, with the man's arm around the women. It was carved in limestone and then painted a tan color. The man is wearing a waist cloth and the women is wearing a full tunic stopping at her shins. The statue was built for a tomb chapel, and the Egyptians thought that the spirits of those who passed away could inhabit the statue, and eat the food that was donated to the chapel. Guanyin and Avalokiteśvara, both bodhisattvas were exhibited in front of our class in the Trout Gallary. The comparasion between two statues gave me a great impression because they two were basically the same person but looked so differently as statues. Both of them are representations of Buddha: one aspired to help all sentient beings be free of suffering while the other tried to reach the Nivana. Even though Guanyin and Avalokitesvara differ from each other from a very large extent based on their materials, sizes and facial expressions, they are both beautiful innerly and outterly. The statue of Guanyin is in excellent condition even though it was made more than two hundred years ago.…

To this day the day, the misconceptions planted by racist historians remain present in the media. American media often displays Africa as a place of extreme poverty and lack of culture. In contrary, however, African people had many advances, even before the arrival of Europeans. The advances of the African Kingdoms are shown through their successful trade routes, ordered government, wealth, Education system, individual morals and art.…

The sculptor of Augustus actually took a traditional Roman pose and applied canonical proportions from Greek art which was shown in the sculpture Spear Bearer. Both statues also have the same smooth textured face and rounding of features such as the mouth and eyes. These works of art also share similar facial expressions as a more stoic look even though they are both posed differently. Even though these statues are similar they are also very different because of their historical purpose and cultural themes. The statue of Augustus of Primaporta uses idealism and realism to depict Augustus as a mighty ruler showing him clothed and with Cupid.…

One of the main physical attributes of the sculpture that indicates it is of a king is that he is wearing the iconic conical crown of Upper Egypt and the ceremonial beard. Based off some of these characteristics, one can tell a lot about the sculpture’s purpose, who may have owned it, and what it originally looked like. The Head of Userkaf is a relatively small piece, standing only approximately six inches tall. As stated previously, this sculpture is carved from limestone, a common, inexpensive type of rock.…

They differ in size, body shape/proportion, garment, and the decorative aspect of the whole figure in general. However, the Romans lack creativity in their art as stated by Elaine K. Gazda, Sculptures in the copy category, a large number of which are marble statues of mythological beings and other ideal subjects made in multiple replicas, have long been a primary focal point of the deeply engrained view that Roman artistes lacked creativity in contrasts to their Greek predecessors who had, according to this view, reached the pinnacle of originality in aesthetic achievement.
