Data Analysis According to the NED Distances Database Introduction, researchers at Caltech calculated the distances of selected galaxies from Earth by calculating the magnitude (luminosity) of stars that display Cepheid variation in those galaxies, and then using those magnitudes to calculate the distance between Earth and those stars using the distance modulus equation. In this way, they were able to calculate the distances of selected amount of galaxies from the Earth, as well as collect data about the recessional velocity of these galaxies with respect to the GSR, or the Milky Way Galactic Standard of Rest (“NED distances database introduction,” 2008).

This cumulative histogram demonstrates that the velocities of most galaxies in this particular sample size were positive, or in other words, moving away from the Earth. The blue color indicates that the bin range includes negative recessional velocities from GSR, or galaxies that demonstrate blueshift; the red color indicates that the bin range includes positive recessional velocities from the GSR. This cumulative histogram of the frequencies of galaxies’ recessional velocities with respect to the GSR demonstrates that most galaxies have a positive recessional velocity with respect to the GSR, or demonstrate redshift.
