The novel Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel reminds me a lot of the movie Mad Max: Fury Road. Both plots are centered around society after earth’s destruction. However, Mad Max is about what happens after the oil runs out, whereas Station Eleven follows the events after much of earth’s population is wiped out by a very contagious virus.
Both books also share a similar character who play leadership roles, and these characters abuse their power. In Mad Max, there is a character named Immortan Joe who controls the water and exploits young women in the society he has created. In Station Eleven, there is a character named The Prophet, who forces some of the townspeople out and controls the beliefs of those to stay. He even forces …show more content…
Kirsten’s passion for acting reminds me of my passion for figure skating. Kirsten began acting before the plague, but she stays acting afterwards, and her entire life ends up revolving around it, as she is a member of the Travelling Symphony, a group of actors and musicians who put on Shakespearean plays as they travel across the country. Though Kirsten gave up her whole life for acting, I can relate to the passion she must have for it. I gave up most other sports and a lot of my free time for figure skating. I was pretty good at activities like soccer and basketball, but I gave all that up when I switched to figure skating, which I was terrible when I began, especially for my age level. However, I just loved it so much that I was able to put the time and effort into it to end up where I am today. I also relate to Kirsten because of the way she thinks. When reading the novel, I could understand how Kirsten was feeling. Even though we live in two different worlds, she has the same thoughts about friends and crushes that any normal girl would have. Additionally, I really understand Kirsten as a person. She is outspoken and likes to read. She also clings to everything she remembers from the old world, such as her copy of Station Eleven, a comic written the ex wife, Miranda, of a main character, Arthur. She even carries around a paperweight given to her the night Arthur died of the plague even though it is an unnecessary weight in her spider man backpack, and she spends all day walking.
