The different perspective of certain leadership style (trait vs process) and (assigned and emergent) discussed in class has given me a clear understanding of their pros and cons whilst making comparison on how some of these leadership style being practiced back home. Process leadership do practice in most government departments however, during the last nine years of military rule, it was greatly restricted in some instances due to the dominant position of leadership with coercion power to make policy changes by our political leaders. In 2008, the City of San Diego and the San Diego Police Officer’s Association (POA) entered contract negotiation. The Chief of Police at the time was Chief William Lansdowne; a veteran police officer himself, Lansdowne was a very charismatic and eloquent speaker. Chief Lansdowne was brought in from the outside (former San Jose Police Chief), in hopes of reshaping the police culture within the San Diego Police Department. At some point, every leader probably thinks about how they want to lead and what is important to him or her as a leader. During the CSC coursework, I wrote my command philosophy, which gave me an opportunity to reflect on past leaders I had encountered, and project how I wanted to lead in the future.
