Statement Of Purpose To Work With At-Risk Youth

Decent Essays
I want to work with at-risk youth because I believe it's essential to support and help children while they are young to have a positive outlook on life and hope it will prevent them from engaging in some form of criminal activity. I also believe that children who have some form of adults' guidance in their lives are less likely to be involved in criminal activities. I believe I would be a good candidate for this position because I have had experience in this field of work. Both of my parents have work 20+ years in the criminal justice and social work fields, so I have seen firsthand the effect an authority figure can have on a child's life. As I explained earlier, children just need some guidance from a supportive figure to change their lives.

African American males start life off being at-risk just because of their race and gender. Carson (2014) discovered that in 2013 3% of all African American males were in prison and only 0.5% of all white males were in prison. At risk does not only translate to prison sentences but also a lack of education and a difficult time obtaining decent work. The lack of these resources is also likely to result in poverty. Toliver (2013) suggests that the lack of educational and work opportunities has translated to an increase in poverty and mortality in black males.…

Short Term 12 was a very interesting movie. It had hints of being realistic, but with aspects where you knew it was a movie. It’s about a group of workers who work in a foster care residential facility setting. The main character, Grace, deals with her own personal struggles while she supervises the children at the facility. I have a short bit of experience at a facility like Short Term 12 in some aspects; I can see where parts of the movie are realistic and where are some are an exaggeration because it is a movie.…

Abstract One of the questions that has been asked countless times is why most are if not all extracurricular activities at our middle and high schools are being taken away. After school programs have been very strategic in helping young people find their talent, career choices and so much more (Durlak, 2007). Football, basketball, band and dance are just a few of the activities that kids have to choose from when it comes to participating in their school activities. According to the San Diego Police department and also a few other Police departments, they have reported that the number of kids that participate in extracurricular activities are less likely to commit a crime (Afterschool Alliance, 2007).…

With ever-increasing learning demands, and limited time and resources, I quickly learned that inevitably some children fail to perform adequately among their peers. This reality came quite clear to me through my experience working and substitute teaching in a public elementary school.…
