Statement Of Purpose To Be A Connections Mentor

Improved Essays
I want to be a Connections Mentor, because I would like to be able to guide first year students as they adjust to college life. As a mentor, I will be able to direct students to various resources they may need. Additionally, I hope to serve as a peer mentor and provide them with information from a current student’s perspective about Texas Christian University. In my personal experience, the first several weeks of college were overwhelming. Each Connection’s meeting served as a refreshing break where I could get to know other freshman outside of my dorm and classes as well as learn different leadership skills. Overall, I would like to make future students Connections’ experience as rewarding and beneficial as mine was.

Andrea and I hit it off immediately. She had the same love and energy that I feel I have as an educator. Needless to say, when she asked me to be her mentor throughout her schooling at Bemidji State University, I was thrilled.…

It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

My approach for students to gain these opportunities is reflected in the model I have established following support tools for student services by challenging students growth and development by challenging their educational and leadership opportunities. Also by guiding students to commit to their own educational experience, develop their own set of morals and beliefs and establish goals for their future career. Lastly, it is important provide students with community to establish their identity as emerging adults, provide a safe living and learning environment, and a supportive community for growth, development, and self-exploration. I believe that my personal philosophy will continue to adjust and develop as I continuously work with students but it is important to be willing to adjust my approach to Student Affairs as both the field and the students are continuously changing and evolving.…

With the high demand for students to obtain a college degree, the majority of society assumes high school seniors should make college the next step in their lives. However, going to college and actually completing the journey is much easier said than done. Many factors such as the price of tuition, the increased competition for scholarships and admission, and the level of support and encouragement one has affect those "college times" in a person 's life. An aspect of this journey that really stands out to me is the use of programs that aid first-generation college students.
