The Latin American Education Foundation (LAEF) has impacted my life in incredible ways and I am very proud to be a part of this wonderful organization. First of all, the LAEF scholarship has allowed me to pursue my dream of becoming a pediatrician. Without their financial support, I would not have been able to attend Metropolitan State University. I am very grateful because thanks to the generous donors I am now able to attend college. I provide for my own food, housing, and additional expense so it is nearly impossible for me to pay for my own tuition. This wonderful scholarship allows me to not worry about where my tuition is going to come from. When I was a senior in high school I was extremely worried because I knew that I was not going

Education is defined to be the road to success or the road for a better life. For many Minorities specially Mexican American 's this means a better life than being a farmer, construction worker or homemaker as their parents have done in order to bring their children to a better country with much more opportunities than their homelands. The wanting for education to be Americanized and to match the level of resources due to the students race and parents income is where the structure is failing. The data does show that Hispanic parents value early childhood education programs and at least know of them. Researchers found evidence to reflect that many Hispanic children’s “Parents express interest in enrolling their children in early education programs and supporting them through postsecondary schooling” (Garcia & Jensen, 2007, p. 1). As immigration rates increase Hispanic and Latino students will continue to grow in population in today’s society, and “despite some progress over the past three decades, Hispanics continue to be underrepresented at all levels of higher education relative to their representation in the U.S. population” (Perna, Li, Walsh, Raible 146). The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) states that Hispanics “represented 14% of all high school graduates in 2004-2005, but received only 11% of associate’s degrees, 7% of bachelor’s degrees, 6% of master’s degrees, 5% of first-professional degrees, and 3% of doctoral degrees in 2005-2006” (as cited in Perna, Li, Walsh, Raible pg. 146). Within the past few years, the Latino population has been rapidly growing in the United States, and far more Latinos are attending postsecondary institutions. Although they are the fastest growing population they are still “found to be underrepresented at select 4-year institutions- Latinos only represent about 8% of college students enrolled at the most selective institutions…” (Kim, Rennick, & Franco, 2014) Many face challenges upon going to college, which include not being well prepared academically, struggling financially, and lacking knowledge of educational resources. In addition, the stress and sense of responsibility for being the first in their families to attend distracts from being completely focused on their education.…
