The Weberian model of the U.S. class structure made me think of my grandparents who arrived in this country as working poor and eventually saw their children become part of the middle-class. It then made me realize how much things have changed for the middle-class over the last few decades. Neither of my parents finished high school and yet both were able to obtain gainful employment. It seems that back then the lack of a high school diploma did not automatically exclude a person from certain positions or the ability to advance within a company. By the time I entered the workforce, positions like the ones my parents started out in now required an applicant to have a high school diploma in order to qualify.…

    Just Mercy Summary

    • 1590 Words
    • 7 Pages

In his book Just Mercy, author Brian Stevenson details many of the failures of justice that he has personally witnessed in his long career as a public interest attorney. Mr. Stephenson relays each case as a personal story. As a reader, I found myself sympathizing with many of the people Brian Stevenson worked to defend. I found myself shocked by how poor and underprivileged people were so often treated horribly coldheartedly by our justice system. Before I had believed our justice system to at least be fair and impartial.…

As I was searching for internships all over the country I was looking for a department that mission statements and values match up with what I have for myself. "Our mission is the reduction of the incidence of crime and the improvement of the quality of life in Arlington County by making it a place where all people can live safely and without fear." As I read over it more and more I realized your mission statement is different from many other departments. First being that your goals are realistic and very achievable, many departments goals are unrealistic like"end crime in this city". That would be great of course but not realistic.…

Stop Recycling Prisoners Of the 3000 students currently attending Highland, 30 are predicted to wind up behind bars. One in every one hundred Americans are estimated to be convicted at some point in their lives. Of the millions currently incarcerated, a majority are recidivists, returning to prison for their second, third, maybe even fourth time. Maybe this is why the United States has, by far, the largest prison system globally. With these prisoners consuming so many resources, the government needs to implement programs for prisoner education and cooperatives to alleviate strain on the budget of the government and, in turn, the wallets of the taxpayers.…
