Statement Of Purpose: The Catholic University Of America

Improved Essays
I am interested in attending The Catholic University of America because it has a fantastic academic, proximity to internships and jobs, and a Catholic identity and community.

Becoming a student of Catholic means that I am going to receive a first-class education from professors that genuinely care about their students. Moreover, having a low student-faculty ratio also fascinates me because it indicates that faculty members can spend more time working individually with students. Before starting this project I came across an article from Huffington Post called Beyond the Conservative/Liberal Catholic Divide, written by Matthew N. Schmalz. My first time reading this article I thought that Schmalz was just writing about the different stereotypes in the catholic religion and that it is possible to be a liberal catholic, which originally sparked my interest. As a liberal I never knew that we could even participate in the Catholic Church, due to my views on Gay Marriage and abortion. Little did I know that there was so much more than just another thing that liberals and conservatives con not come to similar terms on from a local Catholic Church. As a community Saint Thomas Aquinas University Parish practices forgiveness and acceptance for some more than others.…

For my beat, I’ve chosen to cover the neighborhood of Brookland, aka “Little Rome”, which has a population of 35,567 and is located in the northeast quadrant of Washington, D.C., bounded by South Dakota Avenue to the east, 9th Street NE to the west, Rhode Island Avenue NE to the south, and Michigan Avenue to the north. The Brookland-CUA Metro station on Monroe and 9th Street serves the neighborhood and the students of The Catholic University of America and could be considered the midway point between low-key neighborhood gems and a budding urban arts scene. Brookland is a predominantly African-American neighborhood with 66 percent of its residents being black as opposed to 20 percent white. The others are an interesting amalgam of ethnicities,…

I am not a Priest, but a religious Sister from Tanzania lived in the US for 10 years. My passion to be a teacher in the Catholic school system has started a long time ago when I decided the teaching profession was for me. I was just coming out of my Catholic high school and I had made a decision to take a Bachelor of Health Science Degree, in physical education and biology with the end goal to become a high school teacher. It was during this time when I noticed myself asking for help a lot and depending on God’s plan to determine my success. Amy Gutmann serves as the 8th president of the University of Pennsylvania, she wrote the book Democratic Education in 1987, which focuses on the theory of democratic education in the United States. In chapter six of Democratic Education “The Purpose of Higher Education,” Gutmann discusses academic freedom, autonomy of a university, utilitarianism, academic association, and the politics of government and university. Gutmann believes that higher education and the pursuit of higher education is not likely to thrive without lower education, and the issue she notes is that the quality of education needs improvement and all levels of schooling should be made “free and compulsory” (Gutmann 172). Academic freedom is defined as the freedom to discuss controversial issues without consequences from authorities. Gutmann further discusses the “community of learning” (Gutmann 188) and the ivory tower not being the democratic way of academics, and how individuals can learn for their own sake but also within a community and take the knowledge they gather to better society.…
