It’s hard to speak for other troops around the country and in the world, but lately in my home unit, I’ve been noticing a steady decline in the number of scouts in the troop. In the last six years since I’ve joined, I’ve held numerous leadership positions such as patrol leader and senior patrol leader among many others. I’ve learned many new skills and earned over 25 merit badges which will go along to help me later in life. I feel that while I’ve reaped the benefits of the program, there are many others in my community that would benefit from the program.
What my troop and I have been working on has been increasing attendance and membership while also working towards an even more enriching program. I feel that a key factor in our struggle is the inability to talk about the program in our high schools. Getting rid of the negative view towards scouting as a waste of time would be huge in our efforts to increase our attendance.
Our scouting program is an incredible asset to our communities. Many people don’t realize the amount of work that we actually do to benefit our surroundings and the youth in them.
