Statement Of Purpose: The Boy Scout Program

Improved Essays
“I’m a Boy Scout”, the phrase usually met with chuckles when mentioned at high school. You see, people who don’t do it just don’t understand. It’s hard to stay involved in such a time-consuming activity when a lot of people in my life think all we do is tie knots and go camping. The Boy Scout program is what you make of it. Some people are in fact only there for the campouts and other outings that we plan and go on. Others, like me, see the greater benefits in the scouting program that a lot of people fail to notice.
It’s hard to speak for other troops around the country and in the world, but lately in my home unit, I’ve been noticing a steady decline in the number of scouts in the troop. This is a problem that we as a unit are trying to solve. When you’re younger, it’s slightly easier to talk to friends

In the last six years since I’ve joined, I’ve held numerous leadership positions such as patrol leader and senior patrol leader among many others. I’ve learned many new skills and earned over 25 merit badges which will go along to help me later in life. I feel that while I’ve reaped the benefits of the program, there are many others in my community that would benefit from the program.
What my troop and I have been working on has been increasing attendance and membership while also working towards an even more enriching program. I feel that a key factor in our struggle is the inability to talk about the program in our high schools. Getting rid of the negative view towards scouting as a waste of time would be huge in our efforts to increase our attendance.
Our scouting program is an incredible asset to our communities. Many people don’t realize the amount of work that we actually do to benefit our surroundings and the youth in them. However, Boy Scout programs in my area and potentially in the country are facing a dilemma trying to get more youth that are interested in the

In reading Harry & Mary Meinhardt’s legacy, I was reminded of my own career in the military. I also enlisted in the United States Army right out of high school, at the tender ager of 17. And much like Harry, I proudly served for twenty-six years. I rose the rank of Sergeant First Class before transitioning to a Warrant Officer. Having an education has always been of value to me and so has the idea of helping others.…

When I initially began Boy Scouts, I largely depended on my brother and his friends for help and assistance. Eventually, my brother and his friends around his age graduated, and while many moved on to serve as adult leaders, all of them eventually left for college. With this large amount of support missing from my usual routine, I felt lost for a significant amount of time, before I participated in a Philmont trek in the summer before my freshman year of high school. During the Philmont trek, as the youngest member of the crew, I felt highly unprepared due to my overall lack of experience with high adventure and large amounts of leadership; however, despite developing a blister on the first day, I found solace with my crew as they taught me valuable skills that would help me survive the journey. From their exemplary leadership and teachings, I quickly learned not only how to help myself, but also how to assist and guide others as a leader.…

If George Washington and Robert E. Lee were young men today, they would be Boy Scouts and enthusiastic supporters of Scouting, as I am. In fact, in his Sept. 1796 letter to Alexander Hamilton, George Washington himself promoted youth assemblies and behavior strikingly similar to Boy Scout camporees that would take place 125 years in the future: “…but that which would render it of the highest importance, in my opinion, is that at the juvenile period of life, when friendships are formed and habits established that stick by one, young men from different parts of the United States would be assembled together, and would by degrees discover that there was not that cause for those jealousies and prejudices which one part of the Union had imbibed against another.” In my literature class recently, we were discussing how a nation moves from savagery to civilization.…

Camp is place unlike any other. It is a place that people’s wall begin to fall down and new relationships are formed. This is bound to happen when you drop 200 teenagers in the middle of the Smoky Mountains without any of their electronics. I was lucky enough to be chosen for the Project Serve team and got to see camp from a new perspective. I got to be a part of all of the behind the scenes work, but also daily interactions with all of the campers due to my job at camp.…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

The original purpose of the Boy Scouts, as defined by the Boy Scouts of America website is to “promote, through organization and cooperation with other agencies, the ability of boys to do things for themselves and others, to train them in Scoutcraft, and to teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred virtues, using methods which are now in common use by the Boy Scouts.” The original mission of the Boy Scouts, as defined by the Boy Scouts of America website is that “it is the mission of the Boy Scouts of America to serve others by helping to instill values in young people and, in other ways, to prepare them to make ethical choices during their lifetime in achieving their full potential.” In the mission of the Boy Scouts, the term “young people” is not defined as solely a young woman or a young man, leaving the mission to be interpreted at the readers’ discretion.…
