Statement Of Purpose: Republic And Apology By Peter Singer

Improved Essays
Since I can remember, I have always had a great deal of challenging questions to this enigmatic world. I have always questioned myself about religion and the existence of God. Growing up in a corrupt, post-Soviet Union Russia, made me interested in the role that a government should play in a society. As I matured, instead of questioning myself, I started to dig into philosophical books, such as Republic and Apology by Plato, Political Liberalism by Rawls, and so on. In these books I have found the paths that lead me to answer those questions, as well as, to a lot of subjective questions, such as meaning of a good or bad.

Except, in one scenario a kid dies by being sold to an organ peddler, and in the other a child dies of hunger on the street.…

Where do you think the world would be if people like Bill Joy, Albert Einstein, or Bill Gates had never been given the opportunity to excel in their fields of expertise? The world very well may have been a different place, with no understanding of the atomic theory, computer programming, and no high speed personal computers. Their expertise and contributions to today's modern society were all developed out of chance and opportunity. Though many people view the key to success as grit and determination, others believe that the real truth behind those people we view as successful is opportunity. Among those people is well known Canadian author and journalist Malcom Gladwell.…

Looking for the Truth Human beings are inquisitive and toil away to find the answers to questions that they hold dear to them. These questions include reasons for why humans exist or for why there is so much suffering in the world. As humans seek further into divulging the causes, they are simultaneously continuing their search for finding God through theology. There is a bond between theology and humans seeking meaning in their existence; when humans search for a deeper understanding, they are at the same time searching for a deeper understanding of God. In his chapter,” Discerning the Mystery of God”, in Theological Foundations, Brian D. Robinette makes three points relating to the perpetual binding between the two.…

World poverty is more than a causal topic that needs to be addressed with the respect that it warrants. In order to start making progress on the subject people first have to become motivated to do so. Firstly, philosophy contributes to the understanding of the issue, because it offers different arguments for the reason behind human actions, or lack thereof. Philosophy also can be seen as beneficial, because there are some philosophes who offer way as to battle this setback that our world faces. Peter David Singer is an Australian philosopher who claims to have suggestions that will help to bring impoverishment to an end in his pieces, The Singer Solution to World Poverty, and his Ted Talk, Peter Singer: The why and how of effective altruism.…

The End of Government by Robert Samuelson discusses about how there is threat for the government to come to an end. For example, he says how one is spending more but receiving less. Also how Health spending, as well as the aging population, is causing the curb on spending not allowing the proper amount of money to go on other types of important benefits. Samuelson also states that welfare is taking over the government, causing a distraction from being able to take care of other important priorities and dilemmas. Apologizing is usually what a person would do if they have done something wrong, or if they have personally hurt another individual. However, sometimes an apology is given when it is something that people have done in the past. There have been so many wrongs in the past that some people still feel the need to be apologizing for them, and some people still feel they are owed an apology from the governments of the involved countries. In “A Sorry State”, Mitch Miyagawa discusses the many apologies that have been given out by governments around the world and what those apologies truly accomplish. There has been an apology given for every war, every case of discrimination, and every misguided choice.…

A Manifesto of the Civically Just by Evangeline Booth From a very young age, I felt not only compelled by my inner self, but also encouraged by the initiative displayed by my mother and father to stand strongly behind the causes I knew in my heart to be just. However, from years of focusing my efforts on accomplishing this, I slowly came to the realization that it was no longer sufficient to merely stand behind my passive, yet well-intentioned words. One is now required to take willful action to change a situation in favor of the morally correct.…

Peter Singer ultimately believes that we are morally obligated to help those who need help and are suffering. He provides various arguments that support his belief that everyone should help the dying people of East Bengal. He starts off by assuming one thing, “suffering and death from lack of food, shelter, and medical care are bad.” This assumption serves as a foundation for his many claims since it provides a definition for what he considers bad. Furthermore, his first claim is that we are morally obligated to stop bad things from happening only if we do not have to sacrifice something of equal value.…

Questioning a belief sometimes is not always a bad thing. If we did not question something, we would not further understand something. Even though God’s presence is ubiquitous, his presence is not always felt. Sometimes this is why people begin to question personal things in their lives such as their faith, family, and lifestyle. It is human for people to ask questions, in order to further understand a certain topic.…
