While I am excited and anxious for junior year to begin, I am still in disbelief that I am halfway finished with my college career. This past year, I officially declared a Political Science major along with a Latin American and Latino studies concentration. Through my course-work and diverse experiences at Holy Cross, I have embraced what Holy Cross is all about: social justice. Furthermore, my passion for social justice has made me realize that I would like to pursue a career path where I am able to help others. Although at the moment I have not set my mind on a specific career, I am passionate about pursuing a career concerning social justice issues. This is a indeed a drastic change given that ever since I was a young seventh grader, I had big dreams of one day working in Congress. There have been many factors that have influenced my decision, but in particular, my Social Ethics class played a key role in changing the way I thought about the world. In addition to classwork, this course required an extra time commitment, which we refer to as a community -based learning component (CBL). Holy Cross students are avid volunteers in the Worcester community, so CBL is a unique way to integrate volunteer service into the classrooms. For example, I volunteered at a local parish for it’s after school program helping …show more content…
Over time, I formed strong bonds with the kids and it was evident that we were more than just students fulfilling a service requirement -we became friends, mentors, confidantes, and role models to them. Helping the kids was a truly rewarding and worthwhile experience because after just a few weeks, I saw significant improvement in many of the kids’ reading levels. When I noted their progress, I felt a sense of accomplishment knowing that my efforts had helped the kids become better readers (and more well behaved kids, I may

Through high school, Lincoln Charter has been founded on the principles of honesty, respect, empathy, responsibility, service, and preparedness. While I have applied all of these principles in my life, two of those principles have played an important role in an activity outside of my academic life. Ever since the summer before my junior year I have become a monthly volunteer at Mecklenburg Community Church, in their youth ministry and I have strongly applied the principles of service and empathy. In volunteering monthly in their youth ministry it has shaped me as a person who is ready to serve others no matter what might be going on in my life outside of church. Life offers a multitude of life changing experiences, serving at Mecklenburg Community…

Brian’s lecture was really interesting, and got me thinking about the kinds of social justice that I am passionate about. I am really not one for participating in rallies or anything like that, so I figured I was not right for social justice, but after reading in On Being a Therapist I realized social justice can be really varied. He talks about how he has a foundation for helping girls in Nepal to stay in school, because many families who cannot afford school for all of their children sometimes sell their daughters to brothels (Kottler, 2010). I am passionate about women’s rights and it would be incredible to be able to be involved in some kind of social justice that works to advocate for women not just in America but all over the world. But again, this is where cultural competency and understanding addressing frameworks comes into play: equality and empowerment does not look the same to me as it does to women in India, Japan, or…

Just across the highway from Palo Alto, a quaint suburban hub of wealth and academia, lies East Palo Alto, a gritty little town where students face a 60 percent dropout rate, poor prospects of attending college, and run great risk of remaining in low-paying jobs. My high school is in the process of building a $29 million theater, part of a $130 million series of improvement projects, while teachers in East Palo Alto need donations just to cover basics like textbooks, school supplies, and PE equipment. I often wonder how two places so near each other can be so different. For many in Palo Alto, it is easy to ignore the existence of East Palo Alto, but this disparity has always bothered me; the people who live there are just like me, only slighted by an unfair system.…

I have always enjoyed tutoring and mentoring children. Every summer during high school, I would volunteer at Trinity Summer Program, a summer school for first to sixth graders. With a desire to continue working with children, I actively searched for clubs and organizations at UCLA that would allow for me to continue doing so. From my search, I came across Project Literacy at UCLA. Project Literacy at UCLA is a program that pairs a student volunteer with a child from disadvantaged Los Angeles communities for one on one tutoring and mentoring.…

For the past year, I have been a volunteer tutor through the Gems after-school program at the Foundry. The Foundry is a Christian Community Center that serves the impoverished West End of my hometown of Bowling Green, Kentucky. The goal of the program is to provide a supportive environment for the children to flourish educationally, socially, physically, and spiritually. Engaging in Gems has been an overwhelming experience because it has opened my eyes to a sector of my community that I was previously unfamiliar with. I attended a private elementary and middle school; my teachers and parents, along with my mentors and siblings, have continuously encouraged me to prioritize my education by helping me with schoolwork and creating a home atmosphere that promotes intellectual stimulation.…

My first experience with a LCSW gave me a strong desire to never become one. This was due to the fact that my abused best friend was scared that my mother had reached out to CPS for help. While individuals interested in social work may say that their career goals stem from the fact that they would like to “help people”, I understand that social workers cannot change people’s lives, but people can change their own life. And social workers often have the keys and the ability to teach an individual how. Any profession can be considered a “helping profession”: we need dentists, nurses, doctors, accountants, even IRS agents.…

I was never a person who was deeply involved in politics, but as I get older politics affects my education and future career options. As I saw students talking about their thoughts and how it would affect them as individuals, it had been wondering how meaningful it is to really get the word out there about different attributes. The last person to talk at the end began talking about her career as being a social worker, and some people may see it as a bad career and some people may see it as a great career. Unfortunately, in our world today there will be many…
