Statement Of Purpose: My Transition To The US

Improved Essays
My story begins in Maracaibo, Venezuela where 10 years ago I made the transition to the United States. Venezuela’s political and economic situation led my father to move to the United States in search of a better future where my siblings and I would be able to exercise our rights and freedoms to become whatever we chose. As a young teenager, I seldom understood the transition that I was facing and the challenges that awaited me in the United States. Nevertheless, with my family’s support and guidance, I embraced the challenge of learning a new language and navigating a new school system by delving into the adventure that has led me to my future endeavors.

One of the most crucial experiences during my first year in the U.S. was in Mr. Poppinga’s 7th grade science class where I began to develop an inclination to pursue a career in medicine. Mr. Poppinga had asked four medical students to visit our classroom and show the class the organs they had brought. At first, I was hesitant to venture over to the lab bench where the brain, heart, spinal cord, and lungs were located.

I believe that as a future physician I will be able to lead a life of service and leadership while being challenged to enact positive and lasting change. However, my passion for the medical field is centered upon the unique opportunity to influence others directly as a result of developing meaningful, personal interactions such as those that have added invaluable essence to my personal and professional life. Therefore, I see medicine as the platform where I will be able to exercise my full potential as an individual by overcoming barriers of culture and space. I have realized that this was my father’s intent in transitioning to a better future where I can not only exercise my rights and freedoms, but also serve others as a physician, thereby enabling them to do the

It goes without saying that if one is raised in a Vietnamese household, one is strongly encouraged to become a doctor. My childhood was not any exception. Surely, after having suffered tremendously during their unstable lives in Vietnam and making tons of sacrifices on their journey to the United States, my parents wanted my brother and me to become professionals in a country where all opportunities are endless (unlike in Vietnam). My family, however, has always stressed it is the selfless nature of the medical profession that is truly important. My family has taught me that I cannot genuinely feel whole until I know that I have done good for others, especially for those who are suffering and are most in need.…

This life event reaffirmed my desire to practice medicine. At this point I committed myself to becoming a physician-scientist who reaches new scientific frontiers, and at the same time, is able to provide compassionate and effective patient care by the bedside. An M.D./PH.D. Curriculum would allow me to acquire the unique and critical set of skills that would allow me to become a bright researcher who appreciates the importance of rigorous data and innovative discoveries in the basic sciences, and a physician who is able to translate and deliver the interpretations and applications of research findings to patients with compassion and medical expertise. Having been exposed to the joys and frustrations of science and medicine, I am confident in my commitment to pursuing a path of becoming a…

Coming from a musical background, the idea of a medical career, at least from the outside, seemed a rather remote one. However, alongside my musical aptitude, my innate insatiable curiosity maintained and nourished a strong passion for science, as well as ensured that my career goals would be spurred by a desire for continuous learning and discovery. Later momentous experiences in my life would also serve to spark a passion for a life of service, effectively focusing my interests on a medical career, as well as refining key personal qualities that will ensure my success both in medical school, and as a physician. Growing up in a traditional African home in Ghana, it was unsurprising that my future was, speculatively at least, outlined at…

The field is always growing and changing and I yearn to undertake in this lifetime of learning. I find it so exciting that one day I can serve people by improving their health and do so using cutting-edge technologies, some which may have yet to be invented. I may not be able to change the world on the whole, but small actions can have a big influence. I look forward to creating a positive impact on a personal level, treating holistically and compassionately, as this is a career path that calls for an understanding of the human experience as much as it does an understanding of the human body. It is this interplay of science and service that makes medicine so unique, so compelling, and so fit a profession for me to…

Experiences can change you in many ways, good and bad; but some experiences move you in a direction forward and instead of asking, “What am I going to do in life?” you ask, “What will I accomplish to make my life mean the most?” I started college in an accelerated dental program with the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, but both of my parents were diagnosed with cancer within the span of less than a year. After my mom was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer before my sophomore year, I realized this accelerated option was unobtainable as my grades reflected the pain I felt for leaving my family in California for a school so far away. After trying harder academically as the year went on and ending stronger than I had before; my father diagnosed himself with inoperable, terminal brain cancer, as he was a neurosurgeon himself.…

Volunteering as a Health Scholar has truly showed me just how dedicated you have to be to work in the medical field because the days are long and there is a never ending influx of patient requests. The best moments in medicine are when you get a chance to make a patient smile, make them feel heard and make them feel better. While volunteering on the various floors of the hospital, I got a chance to know many patients and listen to their stories. The hardest moment, however, are when despite our best efforts we cannot help the patient. For me, this moment came when I lost my first patient, whom I was just starting to get to know.…
