Statement Of Purpose: Migrant Farm Worker

Improved Essays
As a first- generation college student and child of migrant farm workers, I am dedicated to my educational studies and efforts to earn an advanced degree. My parents immigrated to the United States from Mexico to find work and be able to raise a family where their children would not be limited to educational opportunities. My mom and dad have worked in agriculture for over 30 years and continue to do so. I admire both my parents work ethic. They take pride in what they do. Their jobs are not easy, and I value their effort and dedication they put to raise my siblings and me. I have worked alongside my parents in the fields and this profoundly impacted me. I saw other families bring their children to work to either help with making ends meet

I can only imagine how difficult it is to have to care for a family of six boys considering how amazing of a job they did. Throughout my lifetime I have watched as my parents work night and day to not only provide for our needs but to also each and every one of our wants. They are the most diligent selfless people people I have ever seen and will continue to be for as long as they live. They have taught me what hard work is and what it means to make sacrifices for the well being of others. They have educated me on sharing and service and not by force, but by example.…

Along my journey in school I remember all the sacrifices my parents did for me and my siblings. For example, my father Adolfo Garcia would work from Monday to Saturday from sun up to sun down in order to provide food on the table, clothing on our backs, and a roof over are heads. Although both of my parents encourage and motivate me to attend school and pursue higher education, I am also motivated by all the sacrifices they have made because I know that if it wasn’t for the support of my parents I would not be where I am…

They helped me grow up to think positive about life even if everything might be falling apart. At one point, I remembered my parents having to sell almost everything we owned in order to pay our bills, but somehow they managed to keep a smile on their faces. I never truly realized show serious the situation was until I grew older. I always wanted to help, but I was too young at the time to make any significant impact. Their positivity throughout their hardships however, impacted me to this day and influenced me to look at obstacles as a foundation to build on.…

Both of my parents made the ultimate sacrifice for my future; they left behind the only life they knew in a relentless search for prosperity. They arrived with little more than the clothes on their backs and the willingness to work, a privilege they were not granted in their home countries. My whole life I grew up with the value that hard work is good; if someone came to this country to work hard, there was no fault in that. My belief was shared in my community, which was more than half Latino, this notion was strongly ingrained in myself and my peers. In the past decade, the United States has seen a surge of Latino immigrants as a whole.…

Being an immigrant from a country experiencing issues like health outbreaks, an unjust government, and a disastrous economy has had a negative impact on my education here in the United states. I came from Ethiopia to Minnesota when I was seven years old and at the time mass shootings operated by the government were a norm in Ethiopia. I remember walking to school with my sister and hearing gunshots in the distance followed by adults dragging us into their houses for protection. I also remember watching the news and seeing protesters getting beat with batons by soldiers. Life was extremely difficult for both my parents and I. Now that I am in America, I am thankful everyday that my sister, parents and I escaped the horrid reality of living in Ethiopia.…

As a child of immigrant parents, whom never passed secondary education, I had been told several times by my mother, “I came here so you can have the opportunities I never had.” I never took her words in for consideration. During my last two years of high school, I realized that she was utterly right.…
