North Shore Community College celebrated “Law Day” this year by having noted criminal defense attorney J.W. Carney as a guest speaker. He began his speech by addressing how his own Paralegal makes his job easier by keeping him organized, and having him stay on track by telling him what needs to be done. He gave the advice of “follow your dreams” to anyone starting out in the legal profession. Attorney Carney stated the reason he became a lawyer was inspiration from watching the show “The Defenders,” and from movies like, “Gideon’s Trumpet.” In the beginning of his career, he worked for five years at the public defender’s office, five years as a prosecutor and now is in private practice.…

To be honest, I might have either added or changed my field of passion from this human services program. Originally, I wanted to get into the mental health field of human services/social work and possibly work in a hospital to care the patients. Instead, I might deal more with children (ages 16 years old and below) as examples from my experiences from my last two internships. As for how I got to this current position, it was from selecting internships between semesters. When ever a clinic I wanted to internship, I had to resort to my backup locations when ever a clinic is not looking or interested in an intern or got no response from them at all.…

"Does a tension exist between the educational aims of a clinic and the legal service needs of clients? - A Reflective Essay" It may seem at first that there is a clear tension between the educational aims and the legal service needs of clients when working within a clinic. Growing up, I became adept at running away from people, problems and my fears. When I was younger, I was the victim of bullying being a shy, awkward and overweight child. Not wanting to be a burden to the adults in my life, I dealt with these problems alone, choosing to run instead. At the time, I had no idea that I would be subjecting myself to years of failure, all because I chose to let fear paralyze me. I was in my junior year of high school when I first discovered the weight room.…

In fact, the York law School Clinic Handbook seems to make this friction clear in stating that students have to allow their professional obligations to the client to take precedence over the intended educational outcomes of the module. Nevertheless, I feel that my time in clinic has shown that the tension between these two aspects is entirely superficial. Students may have an overriding duty to their clients but at the International Clinical Education Conference in 2005, Law School representatives stated that a clinic 'must be sustainable both educationally and professionally '.…
