Statement Of Purpose: Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership Team

Decent Essays
Starting my Junior year in high school I was accepted onto the Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership Team (YLT). I had wanted to join the team since attending the Junior Leadership Conference (JLC) held by the team annually, when I was a 7th and 8th grader. The team is composed of twenty-two 4-H members, with their ages ranging from ages sixteen to twenty from across the state and three advisors. I enjoy the team for many reasons. My favorite reason for being on the team is the influence I have been able to have on youth across the state. I am able to do this through JLC, Speaking For Illinois 4-H (SFI-4-H) training, and the Illinois State Fair. At these events I am able to teach youth in a variety of ways, and improve my leadership skills. At

Sometimes I wonder why, out of every city, town, and suburb in the entire country of the United States, my grandmother chose to move to Lynn, Massachusetts. A city otherwise rich in history, but unluckily dubbed over by an ingloriously annoying jingle, “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin, you’ll never come out the way you came in.” I heard it chanted through elementary school hallways, mocked by middle school kids, and hummed by high schoolers. You would think its omnipresence would keep away travelers, but, then again, my grandmother didn’t speak English. She came over from the Dominican Republic thirty-six years ago, with my mother and her five other kids.…

As revealed in my resume, I am a proud member of Plymouth High School Dance Marathon, an organization that fundraises money for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana. For the past three years, I have had the privilege of partaking in the raising of funds for this exceptional Children Miracle Network hospital. In the past three years of my involvement, I have played a distinct role in our collective donation of $85,000. However, this large sum of money did not come easy, and allowed me to employ the use of my leadership skills. When we were only a month away from last year’s Plymouth High School Dance Marathon, we were a whooping $20,000 off of our goal.…

I’m a member of the Student Leadership Team at my school. We created a program called Big Eagle, Little Eagle for my high school. The program gives the opportunity for a elementary student to be paired up with a high student. This gives the high school student the opportunity to mentor younger students, who really need an older role model to talk to. The younger students are selected by the counselors as they know who needs the most support.…

As a volunteer for the RRU Peer Support Program, I planned student and community events to raise awareness around gendered violence and fundraise for the program itself. While working for the YMCA of Greater Vancouver and Douglas Park Community Centre I hosted programs, like sports tournaments and summer camps, and I helped to create a sense of community, through outreach and leadership programs. As a volunteer leader and project assistant for the Great Island Run, a fundraiser to benefit St Mary’s Hospital, I further strengthened my skills in leadership and teamwork. When I was a preteen, I was part of the Youth Leadership Development program at the Chilliwack YMCA. I went on to work for the YMCA as a gym program leader, then as a summer camp coordinator, and finally as a volunteer coordinator for the Youth Leadership program – the same program I had been a participant in.…

In my spare time, I volunteer for two nonprofit organizations. My empathy, experiences as a child, and the known struggles of my environment, gave me the passion for acting on issues plaguing my community. Knowing firsthand the economic struggles many faces in the Bronx, in particular, children, a group from different community boards in the Bronx and myself came together and formed the nonprofit organization called Community Boards Athletic Leadership League (CBALL). CBALL was created to keep children off the streets, mold community leaders, expose children to college and job development. Once a month in the Bronx, children ranging from ages 10-18, from all twelve districts in the borough, play basketball, receive a healthy meal, and do workshops…

There are numerous moments from my childhood that have helped shape my transformation into adulthood. The most of these moments involves my acceptance into my school’s branch of the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation. The J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundations, or JKB, is a program that helps mentor young adults into top leaders in their school and in the larger community. This group is very selective, as only 16 of the top school leaders are chosen each year to be accepted into this prestigious opportunity. Upon learning that I had been chosen as a member of this group, I was excited because I have always heard good things about the group, but did not realize how much of an honor this was until the potential of what I could do was presented…

After becoming an Eagle Scout, I wanted to give back to the Scouting community. One outlet I discovered was to staff National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT), a program designed to teach leadership to younger scouts. In this program, beginner staffers (TGs) are responsible for guiding small groups through the course. After serving on staff for two years, I was promoted to senior staff and had the opportunity to oversee the TGs and lead the whole camp. Last summer, when I again served on senior staff, I faced a challenge in guiding the TGs, and the decision I made was detrimental to the course.…

Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to lead in amazing ways. This includes being selected as a House Captain to introduce and lead our school into the new House System which is officially launching August of next year. The House System divides faculty, staff, and students amongst ten different Houses with the goal of providing an opportunity for students and faculty to interact across grade levels and create a sense of camaraderie. I am also involved in volunteering and leading my Church of St. Patrick’s through my work as a hospitality minister and a lector. Being involved in my church has always been a major priority in my life because ever since I was born, a saying, of many, in my family was, “If it matters to you get involved in it”.…

The Y offers programs, services and initiatives focused on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, according to the unique needs of the communities it engages, and new facilities could help with carrying on the traditions of YMCA’s everywhere. I can relate to this website personally because I myself attended YMCA’s as a child and teenager and I believe that that can teach a lot more than just sports. They can offer leadership opportunities and I will be able to use the information that I learned to inform, persuade and help people of all ages to become leaders and to work harder at developing their own minds through mental and physical activities in order to obtain happiness, recognition, and rewards such as physical achievement, leadership skills, trophies and scholarships. It also helps to know that this website can help me professionally by guiding my programs and directory skills and linking them to determinations and commitments, and to bring about personal and social change in all…

In May of 2015 I attended a Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) weekend. A few hundred kids from Massachusetts and Rhode Island were selected by their schools as leaders to go to Brewster Sea Camps to learn leadership skills and accept the award. We were split up into our “families” with complete strangers based on color of bandana we received, mine being black. We then broke off for the rest of the weekend and competed family against family in challenges that tested who was and who wasn’t a leader. These challenges also brought us closer together as a “family”.…

Sitting around the lunch table, my two friends and I worriedly considered our futures. Requested to represent our school at the Rotary Youth Leadership Award camp, we weakly accepted the invitation. We were shocked, to say the least, that the three of us had been selected, as we, I especially, did not fit the bold, dauntless, Type A personality. Though we normally avoided risks, we agreed to attend the camp, for it appeared to be an opportunity to build our leadership qualities; but could we last the entire weekend? Uncertain, we waited for the date to arrive.…

Regarding the Transition of Youth Group Leadership “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 Most of our churches are in decline due to a lack of young adults and their children. It is no surprise as the older members die out there is no one to fill their seats. For whatever reason, a generation has been convinced that Christianity is either false, subjective or simply an ancient moral code.…

When you wake up in the morning and go for your morning jog, and see people sleeping in parks or desperately begging for money, what do you see? Do you envision failure or opportunity? What do you perceive of the situation? Irresponsibility for all those people’s well-being or, a burden to help get back on their feet? Honestly, when I see someone on the street begging for money, I don’t always give them money, but I have found a way to help people before they get in that position.…
