Sometimes, in sports or in life in general, there are favorites and underdogs. There is a general consensus that the favorite team or player will win but sometimes it`s the underdog that wins and receives all the honor related with that win. This is very similar to what I read about Seabiscuit and what I watched in the video of Jason McElwain. Some people have the ability to transcend their underdog status (ie. Red from Seabiscuit and Jason) and create something very special.…

Valerie Wood’s Enforcer immerses the reader into the world of ice hockey, focusing on the toll the sport takes on one particular team position. The enforcer on a hockey team is the guy that habitually protects his teammates through physical retaliation on the ice. If you ever witness a gloves-off fight during a hockey game, chances are that it is being instigated by the team’s enforcer. While they can play a vital and strategic role on the ice, being the team goon can take a heavy toll on a player.…

The feminist lens focuses on how women and what their roles are in society. In the short story The Skating Party it undermines women’s equality. More specifically when Delia’s sister, Eunice came into town Delia said “I invited Eunice out here to find a husband,” (Summers 7) at a party she held to invite all of the town's bachelors so they could meet Eunice.…

A role model is a person that is looked up to or is an example to be imitated. In “True Story of Lake Ontario” a failed Olympic swimmer attempts a treacherous swimming expedition across Lake Ontario. Similarly a slightly precarious mountain climber makes her risky journey up Mount Everest in “Sharon Woods: No Limits”. Though both women are strong and sturdy role models, one is to a certain extent superior to the other. Even though Marilyn had become an outstanding rile model during her long twenty-one hour trek across Lake Ontario, she still has some flaws to her character.…
