As a child, I remember my mother would bring me to the doctor’s office every other week for minimal reasons, such as a simple cough or a headache. Although I insisted I felt fine, she was always worried my condition was worse than it appeared. Over time, the appointments became mundane as there was nothing significantly wrong with me, and my pediatrician told my mother to stop bringing me so often. As I got older, I realized my mother and I grew in different settings. She was raised in a Vietnamese village, where access to treatment and health care education were limited and overlooked.…

I believe the key responsibility for a Residential Assistant is to build an effective community. To create a positive and productive community, residential assistants should be open, disciplined, and compassionate. Living in a society that is comprised of people from different cultural and social backgrounds, it is important for a RA to emphasize an open environment. An open environment will allow residents to feel secure and comfortable to express themselves, and it will protect individualities of each student.…

Over the past the three semesters, I have served as a member of the executive board for RHA. My role in RHA has presented me with the opportunity to address the concerns of my fellow residents and promote a more cohesive community in my hall. Through RHA I have gained insight on how to program events and bring the community together, which resemble a function that Residential Assistants (RA) strive towards achieving. My work in RHA, overlapping with roles of a RA, inspired me to look into potentially becoming an RA. My interest quickly increased, as I learned about how my work in RHA was synonymous with some of the RA’s duties.…
