Like many others, I was lured into enrolling at Le Cordon Bleu. With their promises they give you the belief that you'll be graduating from a prestigious, accredited and respectable college, with knowledge that will make you successful in a rewarding career. I competed half the program, started working part of the way in, and realized that while the schools kitchen equipment and the books and supplies that come as requirements with our tuition were expensive and new, the actual education is outdated. I took a nutrition class where our primary source of direction was from a video from the 80s. One of the last classes I attended was a chocolate class in which, the majority of the instruction was from a Ewald Notter Chocolate Centerpiece video from the 90s. …show more content…
After a work related absence, I approached the teacher about whether or not we'd get to see any of the other methods and she told me that the class had already done so--the day I missed. She then proceeded to do a demonstration of another method, but awkwardly failed at her

It is wrong to assume that students or instructors are completely at fault for the decline in quality college education. Peter Sacks, a former journalist and college professor, claims in his piece Generation X Goes to College that college students are unmotivated and believe they are entitled to passing grades solely because they’re paying substantial amounts to attend school. Sacks contributes poor college education to the hyper consumerist culture in today’s society, and insists it promotes the mentality that “you get what you pay for, regardless of what you put into the deal”(156).Unlike Sacks ,Gerald Graff argues that the main reason students aren’t doing well has to do with the way professors are teaching. He goes onto say that academic…

As simple as the curriculum should have been, she could not explain anything to save her soul. I ended up having to get a tutor from the University of Findlay to pass the class. During my sessions at Panera with my tutor, she would repeatedly find errors in Mrs. B’s teaching. So, I was stuck for a whole year with three terrible, horrible, no good, very bad…

In “On the Uses of a Liberal Education” Mark Edmundson, cleverly defines his opinion of college education in today’s world. Most notably how education has changed from subjects, which were, previously viewed as essential; have faded away as colleges and universities turn into business selling a product: “Before they (the students) arrive, we ply the students with luscious ads guaranteeing a cross between summer camp and lotus land” (331). Edmundson speaks not only of colleges turning into a business, but also how the students themselves have changed, sharing how when speaking with his students he is careful in selecting his words to ensure students will not be offended (330). He as many other professors fear that a single student could destroy…

I lied about my failing grades because I did not want to experience my parents’ disapprobation. When my teacher frowned while grading my test, I viewed her action as a type of disapprobation. The protest outside the governor’s office was the public’s disapprobation against the new tax increase. Because the dog saw its owner’s disapprobation, it hid its face under its paws.…

Imagine you're entering to your class after a nice and long summer vacation. Your teacher tells you that you're having a test to see how you're doing in that math, english or science class. I am pretty sure that you will not do that well on your test, thanks to your nice and long summer vacation. That is one of the reasons why I believe that a year-round school schedule is better or more helpful for students than having a traditional schedule. to have a better understanding on what we are doing.…

The mission of higher education institutions have indeed changed in recent years as compared to a few decades ago. Before the 1940's, in America higher educational institutions were still solely for those in the elite society. Those with disabilities, of a different race, or of a lower class rarely ever got the same opportunity of those in the elite class to participate in a higher education institution. Most of these institutions were for a particular class, specialized in minimum fields of study, and also lack academic rigor. After the passing of several bills such as the GI Bill in 1944 and the Higher Education Act of 1965, discrimination/segregation within these institutions were lifted, funds were placed to help those less fortunate to…

While observing in Beth Johnston’s First Grade classroom at Eugene Field Elementary School, I have noticed some effective and ineffective classroom management practices that she uses while I have been in the classroom. One effective classroom management technique that I have observed is that Mrs. Johnston puts her student’s desks into groups of three or four. This is an effective technique because she puts her strong students with her not as strong students, which can help with the students who might need a little help staying on track with the lesson that they are supposed to get done. Also, Mrs. Johnston has changed the groups a couple of times since I have been observing in the classroom. This I believe is effective because the students…

College: What it Was, Is, and Should Be by Andrew Delbanco (2012) provides a comprehensive chronological overview of higher education from its origins to the present day. Upon reading the title I assumed the subsequent pages would drag on about the failures of higher education and list a fool proof way of correcting said issues, I am happy to announce I was incorrect. In the book’s six short chapters Delbanco manages to take us back in time and review the origins of higher education in order to better understand where we are today. In the first three chapters Delbanco reviews the evolution of college, which originally stirred from religion, and became the way society groomed young men of age. In 1886 founding president of John’s Hopkins stated that college should always be a place for the development of a student’s character (p.42).…

This week, I was able to be more involved in the actual teaching within the classroom. Last week, I monitored student behavior a lot and made sure that everyone was on task when they were supposed to be. However, this week I taught morning meeting and skills block. During morning meeting, we would listen to the daily announcements on the overhead, then I would call everyone down to the carpet to sit in a circle.…

After distributing a quiz to each student, my teacher set her timer for one minute. In that minute, she expected us to complete the quiz in its entirety, without flaw. If a flaw were found upon grading, meaning that at least one answer was marked incorrect, we would fail the quiz for that week, and ultimately be denied a sticker. This sticker symbolized our comprehension of the material, and was utilized to track our progression on a large chart in the back of the classroom. It was not until I began struggling to learn the material that I became aware of the individual progression of my classmates.…
