Statement Of Purpose: Coming To The United States

Many people believe they are privileged because they have money, popularity, and have traveled the world. I believe I am privileged because of my family's background. My dad struggled to come to this country and has taught me that being here is not only a privilege but a blessing. He came here knowing that he needed to take advantage of the opportunities given to him by this country. This has inspired me to take the opportunities that he has given me. I know that if he did not take the chance of coming to the United States, I would not be where I am today. I have put all of my efforts into succeeding in school and in life. All throughout high school I tried my best to receive the greatest grades I could, to be as involved as possible in my …show more content…
My dad has taught me a lot, and being independent would be one of the many things he has shown me. He was able to make a living for himself at a young age, and I want to do the same for myself. I am currently employed at a restaurant in my town, which has changed me in many good ways. I now know good only comes from hard work, and all that hard work will eventually pay off. I plan on saving the money I make from this job so I could support myself when I leave for college, and not leave it all up to my parents to pay for my education. I enjoy working because it has given me a little taste at adulthood and how things will be for me next year. I know there are not many teenagers out there like me that are willing to mature greatly at such a young age, but my future is something that is very important to me so I am willing to grow up. I know that I will be rewarded in the future for hard work that I put into everything I have ever done. I have also been very involved at my school. I am part of the cheerleading team, which has helped me become more outgoing. I have made many friends and have participated in school activities that I probably would not have if I had not been on the cheerleading

While it is uncomfortable to acknowledge that some of us have an unearned advantage in life thanks to things that we have no control over; such as gender, race, skin color, sexual orientation, accent and even wealth, it is important to discuss to better ourselves. As much as we, as individuals can continue to acknowledge and recognize our privilege it is practically impossible to discard or refrain from benefiting from the advantageous perks of the privileges. 0However, as we are able to see this invisible advantage many deny we can use our privilege to help and speak out and against the societal constructs. Privilege is a right, advantage, or freedom granted or available only to a particular person or group of people. As an American, I was born with a series of privileges. Some of those privileges are educational, financial, and etc. Educationally, I was born in a family where education was highly important and I learned that without this educational privilege I wouldn’t be able to do much in life. I am a privileged person. Growing up as an only child, I had my parents’ full attention and everything I could possibly desire. I never had to worry about my economic status, causing me to adopt a narrow, self-centered mindset. Although I hate to use the word “spoiled” to describe myself, I feel that it is an accurate description of how I was raised. In middle school, my mother drove me to and from school every day, because taking the city bus would turn a ten minute car ride into a thirty minute bus ride, with at least two transfers.…
