Statement Of Purpose: Becoming A Commanding Officer

The humiliating path of failure ultimately led me to the road of success. Admitting to friends and family that I failed was dreadful, if only for the fact that I couldn’t avoid the same question: “Why do the members of your staff have silver cords, but you don’t?” In NJROTC, junior year was the year to prove oneself amidst four hundred other cadets fighting for the same goal- the honor and privilege to become the Commanding Officer for the 2015-2016 school year. This is the highest achievement and rank that a cadet in the program can earn, and I ached for that position.
The main requirement for achieving this rank is participation in the Leadership Academy and in the Sail Training course, which lasted two weeks in Newport, Rhode Island. Upon

For a short period, I put the burden of blame upon myself, which hung over my head like a dark, stormy cloud. However, even though I had let myself down, I realized that many underclassmen idolized me as a positive mentor, and I refused to let them see me any differently. My subordinates motivated me every step of the way, and without them, I would not be a leader. Over those next two months, I began a diet plan and exercised four days of the week, not only to prove myself to my instructors, but to achieve a healthier lifestyle. My passion and drive for the program were now higher than ever. There is a difference between being interested and being committed. My gym trainer told me, “When you’re committed to something you love, you can’t accept excuses, you work for results.”
The end of the year rolled around, and it was time to choose next year’s leadership on Awards Night. It was finally time for my instructor to name the new Commanding Officer. To my complete surprise, Commander Miller announced, “AMY CASTILLO!” It took a moment to sink in, but I realized my three years of arduous work had paid off. I had earned the title of Commanding Officer for the PCTI NJROTC 2015-2016 school

My interest in the Naval Academy came later than most. It began when I entered the Yard on May 24, 2016, and continued to grow as I stepped into Bancroft Hall and read the names of true American heroes who have given their life to the United States of America. I quickly realized that the atmosphere I would be immersed in for four years would be filled with like-minded, motivated people who would help develop and maximize my leadership skills. For the majority of my life, I have looked upon leaders in the game of golf like Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, and most recently Jordan Spieth.…

I define it as putting on the rank, because I never truly became a Chief until I learned the value of leadership after many months of struggling and trying to perform as I always had. It took a lot of soul searching to realize that just because I wear the anchor of a Chief does not always garner the respect I thought I deserved. It took a lot of faith in God and trust that He put me in this position for a reason. That reason, was to change the life of any and all sailors that came under my tutelage. God has shone me, through my faith in Jesus Christ, that He was a true leader and that if I follow the servant leader example that Christ set, people will want to follow me solely based on the fact that I care for them.…

The formal inspection, as we probably already know, is one of the most important events that will take place in the JROTC curriculum. With that being said, everyone in the battalion will need to play their part in ensuring the Cougar Battalion remains an honor unit with distinction. As a cadet aspiring to become the battalion’s Command Sergeant Major, I know there are responsibilities I will have to contribute to next year’s formal inspection. In order to ensure that next year’s formal inspection is successful for the Cougar Battalion, I believe my primary responsibilities are to ensure cadets maintain military bearing and a professional appearance and guarantee cadets have received proper consequences for everything they do or fail to do,…

Lately I have been trying hard to really go above and beyond by volunteering for things both within the squadron and outside of the squadron. One of main things I am doing this semester outside of squadron is continuing to be the cadet program manager for my capstone. Though, I decided not to step down because I saw this position as a very good way to practice my leadership qualities that I am trying to strengthen.…
