Statement Of Purpose: Badger Girls State

Decent Essays
I am interested in going to Badger Girls State because this would be an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity and a privilege for me. My ancestors have always been involved in politics, from signing the Mayflower Compact, being written about in George Washington’s letters, fighting for women’s suffrage, and even now, voting, and voicing their opinions in the elections. I not only grew up learning about politics, but want to pursue a career as a political science teacher. I don’t believe my generation fully understands politics and how important it is for them to vote and get involved in politics. I want to change this in my own classroom. I would use the knowledge I learned at Badger Girls State by passing it onto my students so that the

The West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette case that was argued from March 11,1943, to a decision made June 14,1943. The case was filed when a member of Jehovah's Witness, Walter Barnette, was opposed to children in public schools being forced to salute the flag at activities. If you had asked any of my peers for a description of who I am, they would have said that I was someone who was shy, and possibly even a bit awkward. This was a personality trait that I had been struggling with throughout the majority of my life. I had grown up as an only child, incessantly feeling out of place among my peers. It wasn’t until the middle of my freshman year of high school that I gained the self-confidence I had only dreamed about.…

During the last week of my junior year, I attended South Dakota's Boy's State. For me this was an interesting experience because for the first time I was surrounded not only by the brightest students in my school, but the best and brightest from the entire state. Overall, this was an eye-opening experience because everyone attending had thoughts to contribute to running our own state. Those who became involved had their own personal perspective that was shaped by the social, economic, and geographical characteristics of their home region. The most intriguing aspect of the week had nothing to do with actual government policy.…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

When I first arrived at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I expected higher education to be a bastion for peoples to freely express themselves, providing the ability for both students and faculty to openly interact and engage with their peers regarding a multitude of subjects. Yet this feeling dramatically changed with time. During my sophomore year, I saw the campus’ College Republicans falsely label the school as anti-free expression due to a funding dispute between the group and student government. Instead of debating the value of bringing in various perspectives to campus, the conversation focused around showcasing a conservative perspective in an arena the College Republicans found as threatening.…

The academic system of current society attempts to prepare students for working in the real world. The majority of students are encouraged to pursue studies in areas such as business and technology because it will ensure a high paying job and promote economic growth. Lately, students have begun to question whether studying the humanities are worth the tuition costs, and if a technical or science based major is a better option. Martha Nussbaum, in her essay “ Education for Profit, Education for Democracy”, brings attention to how “the current focus on education as a form of career training fails to teach students the skills necessary to participate in the political process” (61). Liberal arts schools aim to strengthen a student’s range of knowledge through the studies of arts and humanities.…

Since I wasn't able to visit my eighth graders on our usual schedule (my teaching class had an in-class day to reconnect with each other and learn information for our teaching exam- sad face.) , I felt very happy to go visit my kids today! As I entered Ms. Fentress' room when her AI students were exiting, I realized that these kids are just like high school kids. One boy was jamming out to his music, and even rapped for his classmates. It's always funny to see how their distinct personalities intertwine with one-another to make it a friendly atmosphere.…

My goal is to provide all learners the support they need to access the curriculum. I truly believe that we have some phenomenal teachers in our district that can mentor others. I think we need to capitalize on the skills in our district. I think that it would engage other teachers to learn from their peers and possibly open the door for them to try something new that they normally wouldn’t. In addition to providing teachers with meaningful professional development to improve their teaching practices, I would like to push the schools in our district to engage more with the community.…
