Statement Of Purpose: A Career As A Physician Assistant

Improved Essays
The choice to pursue a career as a physician assistant (PA) was appealing to me from the moment I first heard about it. I knew I wanted to untangle challenging cases and combine a career of unrelenting compassion and precociousness. I realized that I possess a dual passion for medicine and teaching. I believe that the dual interests were inspired by my mom, an educator, and the influence of another teacher who taught me about the PA career. This teacher thought she wanted to be a PA; however, she quickly realized her disparate characteristics were incongruent to the field. This triggered my excitement and exploration because I saw myself as capable of handling the conditions she found inundating and I desired to be a clinician. From that moment …show more content…
During a year-long shadowing program in 2014 called TAP-MD, I observed various physicians to learn about their practices and gain interest in the medical field. I witnessed first-hand the discontinuity that separated tiers of healthcare and the historic totem pole effect that has created a communication barrier. Thus, I was intensely encouraged to pursue an integrated and harmonious field that both encouraged balance and equality among professionals. My time as a patient care technician in the emergency department of a level I trauma center has only furthered my desire to become a PA. I work with a team of motivated and intelligent individuals that span from technicians to physicians in a high-stress environment, but I see that we are periodically disjointed because some providers discount other professionals as less capable of providing adequate medical care. This division is unwarranted, and I am emboldened to be a PA who listens with an open ear, gives credit where credit is due, and incorporates everyone’s thoughts into the best care plan for patients as …show more content…
One of those practices that I feel is strongly applicable as a future PA is to exceed expectations. This was one of the core values incited at my first job in high school at a local ski resort. This fervor to go beyond the typical requirements has helped me grow into an assertive, hard-working individual. I have carried this practice of exceeding expectations into school, work, and my scholarship-based employment on campus. For the latter, I have diligently served as a community service scholar: learning and teaching about disparities and social issues that impact the Indianapolis community. As a leader, I have addressed social issues, planned, and led campus-wide service events, and initiated conversation to find ways to improve our community. I am delighted to continue to demonstrate leadership and have another opportunity to exceed expectations this coming fall as I teach a cohort of students in the ServiceCorps program how to pilot their own service events and encourage activism around campus. The opportunity as a community service leader has shown me that I am assertive and capable of delegating tasks, even to peers, and esteem to lead by

Prior to 1965 educators and doctors alike- namely Eugene A. Stead- recognized a shortage of professions that would act as both an assistant and primary healthcare provider. Thus, “the PA profession was created to improve and expand healthcare,” using a curriculum Stead created based on the one used for fast-tracking doctors during WWII, (The History of the PA Profession). This profession requires a bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in PA sciences, as well as a minimum of three years’ medical work experience. A PA works under the authority of a physician or a doctor, meaning they are less likely to have to deal with lawsuits. The profession itself is very flexible with many fields and many opportunities for both part-time and full-time employment, (Cawley, Roderick, and Pedersen 15).…

Superannuated By 2020, the U.S. will face an estimated shortage of 91,000 physicians, split about evenly between primary care physicians and specialists. In 1959 the US Surgeon General declared a physician shortage. After a difficult battle Eugene Stead, MD tasked himself with creating an official schooling for Physician’s Assistants and graduated the first class on October 6th, 1967.…

The physician assistant’s interdependence on a licensed practicing physician allows both of the professionals to practice more independently from each other yet recognize that each has a responsibility to the other. Today, physician assistants function in roles unimagined in the 1960s and 1970s. However, one thing remains the same, the PA and the physician are in a partnership and part of a team, whereby the physician assistant’s role and responsibilities remain contingent upon the expectations of the practicing physician and the scope of his practice.1(8) Also, the history of the profession and the development of the program have shaped the role of the physician assistant in that it recognized that much of what physicians do on a daily basis is routine.
