I have been interested in law enforcement since I was a little kid. I have always admired what they do every day protecting people and catching bad guys. I grew up watching Alaska State Troopers and seeing what they do really got me interested. Another show that I watch is the show cops it really gives me an insight on day to day life of officers. Mr. Meek really got me interested in the state patrol when he had a state patrol recruiter come in and talk to me about joining up. The state patrol have been important ever since they began, because without law and order chaos and anarchy would be widespread. They have helped to keep the peace each and every day. To get started with the state patrol I will be required to have a high school diploma. College is optional but they encourage cadets to have a degree as it will give applicants a leg up in the hiring process. Having a military background also helps because it shows them that I have experienced hard core training and stressful situations. There is no minimum requirement for college education. You can have a four year degree or a two year. For instance some classes you might take are police fundamentals. This class will familiarize you with an officer's role and responsibilities and how officer’s operate in the criminal justice system with legal issues. You will also study the constitution and penal system and civil procedures. They talk to you about steps in patrolling and what you should look for while you are patrolling the streets. Another class is the crime prevention course where they talk about how law enforcement addresses citizens needs. They will teach you all sorts of crime prevention techniques and how handle volatile situations (Minimum) The course will also show you the level of professionalism that is expected of a police …show more content…
Being a trooper cadet consists of guarding the capital convoy escorts and guarding the governor. During this time you will get close to other people who are already commissioned troopers (Minimum). These troopers will help you through the hiring process such as giving mock interviews. They will teach you all you need know and inform you of questions they will ask during the interview. You can even ask them to workout with you and get into shape for when you get shipped out for trooper school. Trooper school is where you are trained in all facets of being a state trooper. After you complete the 26 week basic training course, you will become a commissioned officer. After that they put you in a car and get you on with your career as a Washington State Patrol trooper (Minimum).
The things they look for in a trooper are people who are disciplined and control anger you also need to be able to keep a cool and calm head when you are under stress. People who have prior experience in this field are former soldiers, security guards, MP’S (military police). To gain experience prior to becoming a trooper, I can participate in ride alongs that will let me experience a day in the life of a state patrol officer (Minimum). You can also become a mall or casino security guard before applying to the state
