Benotsch, Jeffers, Snipes, Martin and Koester (2013) investigated how personality traits have a positive relationship with nonmedical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD). The authors examined the predictability of the Big Five model by personality and drug use surveys. Their study found that personality traits were consistent with the students reported NMUPD behavior. Risk taking behavior is presumed to be a facet of openness to experience. Benotsch and colleagues further explained the assumption that Openness to Experience is positively correlated to drug use because of the person’s willingness to experiment and partake in risky behaviors. The authors also discovered that students high in Openness indicated larger rates of stimulant use compared to other drugs. Moreover, the authors found that overall, some personality traits predict drug use compared to others. For example, students with higher levels of neuroticism were more likely to engage in this illicit drug use than those high in conscientiousness. From this study, it is evident that personality traits from the Big Five model are predictors of drug
