Stasis ulcers occur because your veins do not work properly . Veins have valves that help the blood return to the heart. If these valves do not work correctly, blood flows backwards and backs up into the veins near the skin. This condition causes the veins to become larger, which can lead to a stasis ulcer.

Do not wear other tight encircling garments around your legs, pelvis, or waist. This causes increased pressure in your veins. If your health care provider has applied compressive medicated wraps, use them as directed.
• Walk as much as possible to increase the blood flow in your legs.
• If you are taking long rides in a car or plane:
○ Take a break to walk around every 2 hours or as directed by your health care provider.
○ Ask your health care provider if you should take aspirin before long trips.
• If you are directed to do so by your health care provider, raise the foot of your bed at night.
• Check your ulcer every day for signs of infection. Watch for:
○ Redness, swelling, or pain.
○ Fluid, blood, or pus.
• Keep all follow-up visits as directed by your health care provider. This is important.
SEEK MEDICAL CARE IF:
• You have a fever.
• You have new symptoms.
• Your symptoms get worse.
• You have increased redness, swelling, or pain at the site of your ulcer.
• You have increased fluid, blood, or pus coming from your ulcer.
SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL CARE IF:
• Your pain gets worse.
• You have chills.
