There is a large cypress tree on the left corner of the painting, as well as, circular glowing stars in the sky. Van Gogh used the oil painting media, which really helped give variety in the colors. The colors Van Gogh chose were vibrant hues of blue, black, green, yellow, and orange. The bottom of the picture illustrates the town houses and a church. For this section Van Gogh mainly uses dark blues and blacks. The top half of the picture illustrates the bright swirling stars and moon. In this section Van Gogh uses dramatic yellows, oranges, and blues. The contrast in color of the top and bottom has really conveys the emotion van Gogh is trying to portray. He also had a great use of lines in his painting. According to Artble, “Van Gogh's use of white and yellow creates a spiral effect and draws attention to the sky. Vertical lines such as the cypress tree and church tower softly break up the composition without retracting from the powerful night sky depicted in Starry Night.” This painting is particularly known for its texture of heavy brush strokes, which contributes to Starry Night’s dark mood
