Recently, Starbucks released a report to evaluate the global responsibility of our company for the 2014 fiscal year. The report focused heavily on the sourcing of the coffee, the quality of life of customers, employees, and farmers, and the communities we serve. Many years ago, Starbucks realized our success was because of the quality coffee we are serving to our customers. The company wanted not only to continue to serve top notch coffee but to continue for many years to come. To achieve this goal, the sustainability of the farmers, employees, and communities are very important. This inspired the Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practice which was developed in part by Starbucks and Conservation International (CI), which helps promote environmentally …show more content…
Starbucks and CI also incorporated agricultural methods into C.A.F.E. which helped to reduce emissions, improve carbon storage, and manage climate risks from pests and disease. Not only does Starbucks and C.A.F.E. aim to produce well farmed coffee, but it also involves measures to increase the quality of life for farmers, our employees, and our communities. To achieve this, the Practice includes aspects that focus on fair pay and healthy working conditions, economic transparency, and sound resource management. To further our research and to be more responsible, Starbucks collaborated with agronomists which are people who study the production and use of plants as food among other uses. The business continued to improve the coffee and productivity but also reduce production costs. Due to the success of the program, Starbucks established 6 farmer support centers in popular growing regions, a satellite office, and our own farm (Facienda Alsacia). The company takes the needs of our suppliers very seriously. We work with our suppliers to achieve fair coffee prices and invest in farmer loans. Therefore, the company has taken many efforts to focus on our communal responsibility. Starbucks took notice to the overwhelming number of youth seeking employment, so we took action. In 2014, we introduced the Starbucks College Achievement Plan which aimed to help students achieve college degrees online through the University of Arizona. Starbucks has donated grants to a variety of foundations to help build customer service skills in youth to help prepare them for the job field. Since 2011, the company has opened eight Community Stores which have raised more than $900,000 for non-for-profit organizations that educate youth to try to eliminate the cycle of poverty. Much of this is made possible by the Starbucks Foundation which gives millions of dollars in grants to deserving causes. The foundation is primarily funded by Starbucks corporation, but it also receives private donations. In 2014 alone, Starbucks donated around $11.4 million to a variety of causes. We’ve also worked to help minimize the number of unemployed veterans.
