Being mindful and vigilant of our community and environment are all important aspects of a contingency plan; however, we also have to be in compliance with federal, state and city ordinances. Federal laws and regulations such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA), are a few federal laws that regulates hazardous waste and materials (Sauter & Carafano, 2012). Identifying various types of terrorist activities/weapons and combating terrorism cannot be accomplished alone. Antiterrorism measures requires the collaboration of the intelligence community, state/local law enforcement, and citizens within communities. Preparing a disaster kit and keeping it in accessible locations within your place of dwelling, will protect your family and love ones during catastrophic events. A disaster kit consists of “water, food, first aid supplies, clothing and bedding, tools and emergency supplies, and prescriptions” (Sauter & Carafano, 2012, p. 459). Critical preparedness for catastrophic incidents that is either terroristic, man-made, or by natural disaster, is not commonly practiced by most American businesses, families, and individuals. Sauter and Carafano (2012) noted, “The larger the company, in terms of revenue and employees, the more likely it is to have plans in place and test them annually. Preparedness on the part of small companies remains a concern” (p. 432). The September 11th incident along with other terrorist attacks that is currently going on should be a wakeup call for most of us.
