Guided by Smith and Clark’s (2012) 25 Techniques of Situational Prevention, I came up with 5 recommendations, which are listed as following and ethics of these tactics will be discussed as well:
1st. Assist natural surveillance, and strengthen formal surveillance. The first suggestion will be moving the rotated shelf which contains the items on display deeper to the center of the hallway and make the rotated shelf be against the glass wall. In this way, …show more content…
Assist compliance. The coffee shop can also set up a program called “Buy them a cup of coffee”, which can be operated in this way: certain amount of customers, e.g., five people, are encouraged to buy one extra cup of coffee for those who cannot afford it a day, and in return, customer who bought the extra coffee can get discount on their next purchase. The manager can post the sign near the packaged coffee saying that “If you cannot afford a cup of coffee, please tell us and we have a surprise for you.” shoplifters may be touched by this kind gesture and give up the criminal action.
Felson and Clark (1997) explained the ethics of situational crime prevention and refuted the criticisms of it by declaring that “situational crime prevention is ethically superior to other forms of crime control.” I also believe the 5 recommendations I raised are ethically reasonable since all the customers are fairly and equally treated in the tactics, they are free to choose wither they will participate the programs or not and every one can be motivated to carry their crime prevention
