Communication Analysis: When Anakin Turns To The Dark Side George Lucas’ Star Wars: The Revenge of the Sith is a fascinating movie that describes the concepts of interpersonal relationship. The movie provides the uses of indirect and direct communications from various characters, which are vital to the fluidity of the movie and how characters build relationships. For example, one scene that builds the interpersonal relationship of two characters is when Anakin Skywalker approaches Chancellor Palpatine at his office. What I’ve learned from researching this scene is that manipulation can be incorporated through assembling information in a different way. For example, according to Dr McCornack definition of Information Manipulative Theory, “[It is an example] of looking at interpersonal communication. It deals with the way a sender might assemble information packages (in the form of messages) to a receiver in order to give an impression that is false from the perspective of the sender.” In the scene, Chancellor Palpatine tells Skywalker that he can save Padme from death by learning the Dark Side. By analyzing Palpatine message, he does not give any proof that this is true. However, the way Palpatine assembled the response to the Skywalker (the sender) showed how mesmerized Skywalker was about the topic. Chancellor Palpatine is a powerful person, he was able able to manipulate Anakin becomes of his knowledge, experience, and his high position. To clarify, he mentioned topic of cheating death to Skywalker. Palpatine expanded Skywalker’s mind by using prior knowledge from what he learned from understanding the Darkside. According to Palpatine, “Only through me can you achieve a power greater than any Jedi. Learn to know the dark side of the Force, Anakin, and you will be able to save your wife from certain death.” Palpatine exaggerates to Skywalker that his knowledge is the only way to save Skywalker’s wife from death. Whether this is true or not, Palpatine chose to share essential knowledge with Anakin. This example is a reason why people get deceived by others.
