The story of A New Hope opens by telling the viewer of a rebellion simply known as The Rebel Alliance. The Rebel Alliance was formed to destroy the Empire and restore the Republic, because of the evil the Empire has done to the people in the galaxy. The Rebel Alliance has captured plans to a superweapon created by the Empire known as the Death Star, which was capable of destroying entire planets. Darth Vader has captured the ship which currently holds Princess Leia of the planet Aldeeran, who holds the plans to the Death Star. Leia gives the plans to a droid known as R2-D2 and sends him and another droid, C-3PO, on an escape pod in an attempt to return the plans to the Rebel Alliance so they may find a weakness in the Death Star and use this weakness to destroy it. Leia also gives R2-D2 a message to deliver to an old Jedi known as Obi-Wan Kenobi, who managed to escape the Jedi killings. She believes Kenobi will be able to return R2-D2 to the Rebel Alliance. Darth Vader learns that the droids were sent to the planet Tatooine, upon which he orders soldiers to go to the planet to capture them, and then takes Princess Leia
