I believe that exploring our universe with unmanned spacecraft will bring us a wealth of information that can aid us in understanding the world we live on. Sending man into space was a great adventure and the transmission and photographic technology available in the 60s and 70s when the space race was at its apex was not as robust which prevented us from seeing everything there was to see and learn in outer space or on other planets. That has changed considerably in the past 20 years. We can now send cameras into space that can transmit data that would have taken us years to analyze and understand in the early years …show more content…
It still is one of the most fascinating sites on the internet but now that there are a billion others, I don’t hang out there as much. I also used to watch a lot of Star Trek. My husband and I watched the original version with its low-tech special effects and then got into the second series called “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” We were never Trekkies but we both enjoyed sci-fi and the “Next Generation” series was actually quite well done. One of the things I always appreciated about this fictional foray into outer space “to boldly go where no man has gone before,” was their prime directive to not interfere with the civilizations they visited. It made for some interesting plot twists when they knew they could make things better for the civilizations of a distant planet, but I only remember one episode where they actually did interfere medically to cure a disease. I wonder if we could exercise the same kind of restraint if we were to find ourselves in the midst of a new civilization on another planet. I doubt it. Our history of interference in other countries and cultures would lead me to believe we would think we were wiser and should step in to fix things. I do believe America has a moral obligation to lead and protect against tyranny in other countries and cultures but we never seem to get it right when we interfere. And, space travel should be a global effort and decisions that could impact the future of our entire planet or the another civilization on another planet, should be at least discussed with other nations – most of whom we can barely get along with. Because of the propensity we have to step in and screw things up, I really think we should just stay here and try to improve our own
