Case Study: Star Scholars Inc.

Superior Essays
Star Scholars Inc is a tutoring company based in the Crown Heights area. It was born in 2010, just a 500 square feet space and a CEO with a dream to educate his community. It is conveniently located next to the Maple Street Library, an iconic location in the community. It is in the community, for the community. Six years later, there are two centers and the company has grown into a household name. There are different ways this company provides growth and measures its success: performance evaluation, biweekly meetings, effective budgeting, and student surveys.
Star Scholars Inc was built six years ago, and its main focus was to educate the community of Crown Heights through 1-on-1 tutoring, after school program, summer camp and test prep.

The company will be able to market and brand itself simply because it will have an edge on its competitors. The student surveys play an important role in this category because the data can be used to improve the after-school program. Improving the after-school program can have a ripple effect on the other programs such as the summer camp. The children will form bonds as they are interacting with each other. These long-term bond and sisterhoods/brotherhoods will cause them to return for the summertime because they look forward to seeing their friend. This will then strengthen the program, generating more income to the company, further influencing its growth. Budgeting is done at the start of the program because it provides structure and order. Occasionally, it is reevaluated to strengthen the ethical values that will create a better workplace. To elaborate, the manager will discuss information with the human resources director, who will then relay the information to the …show more content…
The budget for this program is done with a veteran tutor, since they would have acquired the right skills and qualifications needed to promote fiscal responsibility. The ideas discussed are then brought to the co-director and human resources co director who would evaluate what reinforcements are needed. This program is not as lucrative as the after-school program because it is not the best advertised. Students that come for this program are usually seasonal and short term. For example, an SAT student would only need tutoring for about 1-3 months. A college student may simply need test prep and their learning curve will be well adjusted in a short period. A college student who needs help editing their paper may only meet once or twice due to their major. A junior high school student will be there for about a year maximum. This program is the most flexible, but it functions as an umbrella for the most solid program. To strengthen this program, there needs to be more tutors and more space for this program only. Since the idea of one on one tutoring is traditionally individualized, a bigger space will be more conducive to learning. This will provide room for financial growth, meeting rooms and high technology. The company installed a card reader, which is not as popular among the current parents, but with better marketing in the future, the use of a credit card may be necessary and the business will be needed. Change in our communities, businesses and education is inevitable. Education of our youth has predominantly been provided by our government along with non-profit and profit private schools, which co-exist within our educational system. Since 1954, the Bayer and Freesmeyer’s families have owned and operated a group of non-profit schools, known as the Rancho Solano Private Schools (RSPS). In 2007, RSPS was sold to the Meritas International Family of Schools, a for profit Illinois-based organization, (Oke, 2011). The mission of the organization was to broaden the curriculum at Rancho Solano along with the original nine schools, operated by the Meritas organization by incorporating an international focus in the curriculum.…

According to Pahl and Richter (2007), threats are possible events or forces outside of the organization’s control that must be plan for or agree upon how to mitigate. One of the biggest threats that PCA faces is low enrollment during the summer months. It is unfortunate that in the general area, parents do not seek summer child care. Because summer months’ fees are usually higher based on summer activities, parents tend to find alternative child care which means that children will not be attending the academy.…

As I began this class in January my definition of curriculum was based on the academic coursework teachers use to instruct the information. Now my definition of curriculum is anything that falls under the auspice of the school that includes coursework, classroom arrangement, instruction, assessment, student engagement, and community involvement. My perspective is curriculum is what students learn in and out of the school. We need to teach students to become learners and problem solvers for the 21st century. I currently work at The Academy at Penncrest High School through the Simon Youth Foundation.…

There are different types of budgeting and planning that are available to a business, however organisation have to carefully decide what strategy works for them depending on their business model. After the completion of this topic in week 5, I was able to understand that there are unethical practices associated with budgeting one being the fact that managers might exploit the process for personal gain by purposely deflating their projected sales income to make it easier to achieve a bonus (Blumentritt, 2006). As well, Wolf (2015) stated that budgeting includes assumption, if this assumption is done wrong it can lead to managers making wrong decisions and take attentions away from problem area. This has led to my understanding as to what extent managers will continue to use budgeting to their personal gain and the global effect it will have in international business. The ethical issues associated with BSC is also not so much of a threat to business but it is important to draw the attention to the fact that managers view this as a quick fix, which can be easily installed in their…
