Star Of David Research Paper

The Star of David is a symbol used to identify Judaism. It’s supposed to represent the shape of King David’s shield (Levine 2015). This symbol is well respected in Israel, it’s part of their national flag. It’s called a hexagram or six-point star (Levine 2015). One of the first Jewish uses of the Star is part of the colophon; part of the embroidery of the title page of a book, the printer sometimes included the family name on the colophon which showed class and wealth (Levine 2015). Today the star is used for many things such as, jewelry, religious items, clothing, and much more. Its main use is to identify the Jewish people. The Star of David means a lot to me, it’s part of who I am, what I believe in, my religion, and my family history. I wear my Star of David Necklace every time I go to the synagogue, and sometimes in my day to day life. When I wear my star it makes me feel connected to the religion and my family. My grandmother, Miriam, gave it to my mother, who gave it to me when I was born and I have had it ever since. The necklace means a lot to me just as the Star of David itself.

Lighting two candles on Friday night after sunset is done to represent the beginning of Shabbat. Shabbat is the day God rested out of the seven days he was “making” Earth, so the Jewish people rest from sunset of Friday night to sunset of Saturday night to respect that (Siegel). We light the candle to stay connected to God as the flame (fire) is one of the natural elements of our world.
