Star Girl Book Report

The first book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading was Star Girl written by Jerry Spinelli. I read this book in my sixth-grade class, and although it was not my first chapter book I’ve read, it was a book that I have the earliest recollection of reading. This is because it was the first book that grasped my interest and I fully understood the characters, the plot, and the main idea of the story. I was able to make connections with the characters because they dealt with similar things that as a new middle school student I was dealing with as well. For example, in the story Star Girl, the main character is starting a new school, so she’s trying to fit in by making new friends and joining some extracurricular activities. She also had to deal with older middle school students who were not so friendly towards her as well. However, in high school, the writing assignments were more intense, and we had to illuminate the littlest detail in the book and explain why it has such an enormous significance in the story. For example, we had to explain what Gregor’s father job uniform symbolized and the meaning of Gregor’s transition from human to a giant insect. Critical analysis papers were also difficult at first because it required using personal experience or examples from outside source to strengthen my ideas. This was sometimes hard for me because I did not enter high school with a strong writing background.
