Star Event Reflection Paper

Decent Essays
In my four years of high school, I have been involved in an organization called "Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America". This organization has given me the opportunity to get involved in a star event. My cousin and I are the leaders of this event, which will take place during the first week in January of 2017. Our plan is to make at least 150 hats to deliver personally to the Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. We have set up all details of our goals, the expenses, the amount of supplies needed, transportation, and fundraisers to make this event happen. Once getting involved in this star event, it brings us joy knowing we can make a little difference for the young children that are going through this tough time.

In the article, A Star is Made, Anders Ericsson, a 58-years old psychotherapy professor at Florida State University, tried to answer the question “When someone is very good at a given thing, what is it that actually makes him good?”. To answer this question, he conducted an experiment, about memory training. This experiment involved a person hearing a series of number and then repeating it. After a few trials, he concludes that memory itself is not genetically determined, but instead though a lot of practices and training "He kept improving, and after about 200 hours of training he had risen to over 80 numbers". With these results, he moved on to another process called deliberate practice.…

I represented Mr. Shatner in this week’s simulation. The first thing we talked about in our negotiation was how many characters from Star Track would be in the play. My original strategy was to inform the theater that Mr. Shatner did not want any members from the Star Track franchise to be in the play. However, the theater informed me that there had to be some characters from Star Track in order for the play to be successful. The theater then asked me why I did not want characters from Star Track in the play.…

Every day there are thousands of men and women serving our country in the armed services. They are someone’s brother, sister, father, mother, aunt, uncle, son or daughter. They spend many months and sometimes years in a foreign country far away from the comforts of their home, some without family or friends to thank them for the sacrifices they make daily. Since the age of four when I saw the cover of Time Magazine featuring wounded soldiers, I have desired to do something to say “thank you” to the troops for their service and show my appreciation for them. Living in Maryland, so close to Washington DC, you would think there would be a lots of opportunities to thank our troops.…

These services not only brought joy to those around me but provided me with memories that will bring joy to me for the rest of my life. Experiences like this have opened my eyes to the lives of others and the importances of being a kind and gracious person that is willing to provide joy to others. That's the key to service, it isn’t about how much you volunteer. Service is about the people you help. Whether it be a moment of joy, or a donation to improve their life, the importance of service is what you…

Scholar R.J. Raack is for “film as history” by arguing that the traditional written history is too narrow to focus on the complexity of it. Raack states that film is the most appropriate medium for because, “Only film can provide an adequate "empathetic reconstruction to convey how historical people witnessed, understood, and lived their lives. " Only film can "recover all the past 's liveliness” (1176). Furthermore, he believes this because of film’s ability to juxtapose images and sound and the editing techniques to convey history. In contrast scholar Ian Jarvie believes that film is not a meaningful way to portray history due to the lack of information and discursive weakness because film, “[…] does not consist primarily of "a descriptive…
