Star Diaries 'And The Light In The Forest'

Three words that I would use to describe myself are energetic, passionate, and honest. I am often energetic, especially in new environments where there is so much to learn. In order to discover it all, I need to have enough energy to keep me going. I am passionate when it comes to issues I believe in and positions I feel strongly about. Whether it is a debate or even during class, my opinions stay strong and passionate. I believe that honesty is the key to growth. I give honest feedback in hopes that I will receive the same. If my peers grow, it allows me to grow as well.

2. Two books that I have read recently outside of school are "Star Diaries" by Stanisław Lem and "The Light in the Forest" by Conrad Richter. I enjoyed both of these books, though I enjoyed "Star Diaries" slightly more. I personally prefer science fiction, and I was stepping out of my normal genres with "The Light in the Forest". The way Lem combined philosophy and science fiction was incredibly interesting. It inspired me to delve beyond the surface of normal events to see the moral issues and opinions beneath them. Richter's story opened my eyes to historical events I had not heard of, demonstrating the social biases between different societies. I found it extremely interesting.

Over the last summer, I visited my family in Poland. We go to Poland often, and visit different places each time. The summer before that, we traveled to Australia. It was an amazing experience to be on the other side of the globe. We visited Sydney and Cairns. We went to the rainforest, the city, and went snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef. The rainforest was amazing, especially the amount of different plants and animals that live there. It's sad to see the reef dying now with hotter sea

The historical non-fiction book I chose to read was Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed, which was written by Jared Diamond. After reading the descriptions of the historical non-fiction books, the description of Collapse engrossed me the most. I was interested in the book because it explained how and why some of the most famous ancient and modern societies just fell apart and collapsed. In Jared Diamond’s book, he talks about societies that collapsed such as the ancient societies of the Maya, the Greenland Norse, the Easter Islanders and about modern societies such as Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and more. In the book, he analyzes the falls of these societies and explains their collapses by using his “five-point framework.”…

Being a middle school education major one specific text comes into mind that my perspective changed is, Wonder by R.J Palacio. When I first read this book, I was in high school helping my younger sister who was going into middle school and was assigned this book for her summer reading. I did not understand why this book was chosen and why it was a must read before entering her years of middle school. After reading this book for the second time in college and analyzing it, I fell in love, I actually participated in the Cormier Symposium here at Fitchburg State last year because I truly think it is a staple for incoming middle school children!…

Hello, my name is Jacob Buren. The adjectives that describe me are determined, stubborn, and investigative. The reason I used the word determined is because if I set my mind on something I get it, no matter what's in my way. I won’t stop until I reach my goals and succeed. Another word I used is stubborn because I won't give up when everyone is telling me to just give up and stop trying.…

Reading has been a passion of mine since I was a child. The first book I remember reading while grasping an important concept was The Giver by Lois Lowry. The novel focuses on a young boy who lives in a society that enforces conformity as well as restricts emotions and emotions. The boy gains a sense of individualism from the new emotions he is allowed to feel. This rebellion against an oppressive society helped pique my interest in dystopian novels.…

After Hurricane Maria a couple of weeks ago, the lives of numerous friends and my family changed and as a result, I have been wishing that at some point I will go to my island and see the differences that a natural disaster could do to the lives of countless people. Therefore, if I have the chance to choose where I would go, it would definitely be Puerto Rico. The reason why I would like to go is that since the hurricane, I haven't seen peers saying: "We will go forward from this crisis", instead they just give up and leave the island to have prominent opportunities in a different establishment. Consequently, since then I have been yearning to see a change.…
